The error message I get is in the oval window that occasionally gives
system information.
Specifically it states "DIV ERROR: 3000:00FF" and the whole machine
locks up and must be rebooted.
I bought an AKAI because it is supposed to be rock-solid but I've been
working it hard today and it has crashed four times! I think this level
of flakiness is inexcusable for "pro" performing equipment.
If anybody has experienced this error or has any insight about what the
message states (memory related?) I would like to hear your opinions. I
spoke with AKAI tech support and they were not helpful.
Thanks,
Stewart S. Walker
(laughing) the MPC 2000 is about as far from "pro" as you can get... its
a poorly designed and built box that melts down in any number of fun and
entertaining ways... I've heard stories of countless people losing
entire recording projects and going back to a 3000 or an ASR-X... I went
through three of them before I got one that was close to acceptable...
and then that one went down after about three months... I love the pads
and certain things about the machine, but the build quality has me back
on my E6400 for all of my sampling... life is too short to wonder
whether the sample edit will take this time or whether your sequence
will be there the next time you need it...
Ever notice how many of these things are available for sale?

BTW, some of the memory problems can be traced to incompatible memory
upgrade chips... make sure you get the right ones
Nick & the guys at support are GREAT, have patience, but they didn't
write the code, the idiots who wrote the code sit in their Ivory towers in
Tokyo and count the money they fucked us out of with this half assed
product. Damn them.
I've heard of thermal problems with over heating, also, double & triple
backup your stuff. How about this, have you had a sequence come back with
999 bars?? Boy does that suck! peace, Cameron Grant, Alpha66 Orlando
And they discontinued the 3K? Boy, that's thinking!

There's actually quite a few people using MPC-2000s for live performances
without problems (that I've heard of). For example, Daum Bentley (aka Freaky
Chakra)
uses one, and even manages to continually muck around with the sequencer
during
the performance. Out of the three or four shows I've seen/heard, I've never
noticed any glitches or even timing problems.
I've been thinking about getting one soon, so I'm curious what kind of bugs
you're experiencing. How much has the 1.7 release of the OS helped, if at
all?

Well there are so many problems with this box that its hard to
differentiate between the OS problems and the hardware problems... the
early OS revision did clear up some things, but I know several people
who have the most recent OS and still have problems with their sequences
changing and various other frustrating occurences... of course many
people use the MPC's without problem, and if you get a good one, you are
set... but these problems can rear their ugly heads months after you buy
the box, just around the time you are feeling dependent on it... I'm not
saying that people shouldnt buy an MPC, but like Zip drives and their
"Click Of Death", buyers should beware... it only takes one serious
meltdown which loses you a couple of months' work... its just better to
know the perils upfront and make your decisions accordingly...
Akai should pay Roger Linn his money and get him back on board for an
MPC 4000 or something...
