Hi

Can anyone recommend a decent pair of headphones
to go with a XP-60 ?

- Faithful representation (esp. the base)

- comfortable with long use (I wont have any external
speakers initially !)

- Wont have to screen out external noises etc.

Are walkman-style headphone completely out of the
question for un-coloured, faithful reproduction of sound ?!

Depends on your budget. I could recommend some fantastic Sennheisers but
they're not that easily driven, which meaning you'd be smart to buy a
headphone amplifier for them. Sounds to me like you'd be happy with a pair
of Beyerdynamic DT 250. DT 770 Pro is 600 ohms so forget about those without
an amp. If you don't want closed/sealed cans Senhheiser HD 580 Precision is
very close to the top model HD 600 Avantgarde, but both the 580s and the
600s benefit greatly from a headphone amp. They still rape most of the other
stuff out there without one though. Avoid the 580s "replacement" HD 590s (or
whatever they're called) at all cost. All the headphones mentioned above are
DFEQ'ed. You might want to stop by...

Oh absolutely. You need DFEQ'ed headphones. Just make sure you don't get
cans that need a lot of power unless you intend to get a headphone amp. The
direct headphone output amplifier in a synth isn't exactly, uhm, great. You
get the picture.

Thanks.

My Budget hopefully about 50 GBP, certainly less than 100GBP

But must be comfortable over a period of time
because I wont initially have any external speakers at all.

Probably "open" design, it sounds like because
a) better quality sound/ flatter freq response (??)
b) get less hot/fuggy (?)

Any thoughts on the AKG K66 (suspiciously cheap at GBP 35.00...)

P.S. Sorry for the newbie question but what's "DFEQ" and roughly what would
ohms would consitute "needing a lot of power"...?

Buy them then. I've given you my advice as best I can.

PS.

DFEQ'ed = Diffuse Field Equalized = Flat Frequency Response. Ask your dealer
if the AKG's are just that. Not 100% sure where the crossover between
easy/medium/hard is when it comes to ohms. Check the DT 250 specs. They're
easily driven. Knowing Beyer, however, it's possible they make several
versions (ohms).

I have Sennheiser hd600..they are totally fantastic!...really. But sinve
they are open design, they don't screen out external noises.
they cost about 300bucks though.

I would absolutely not recomend walkman style headphones.

I strongly recommend you get a headphone amplifier like, say Musical
Fidelity X-CANS for your HD 600s. I have 580s and 600s driven by those and
the difference sure ain't subtle.

I used Sennheiser HD 570... of course, it ain't as good as hd600 (my friend
has one, and it's brilliant!)
it's cheaper, (about $100) and got good sound.. it's open back, 64ohms,
very comfortable to wear (from many opinions, it's the most comfortable
headphones)... I have a HD25 (close back headphones) for loud studio
monitoring, but if i just overdubbing stuff, or recording along with quiet
instruments, HD570 is always my choice, cuz it sounds lovely. For listening
to music or general use, I think it's slighty too bright, therefore, need
to use the EQ in either your sound card (if you have) or those one within
Windows Media player or Winamp, and push the bass frequency up. It sounds
good even for dance tracks. Try it from the shop.

Obviously, if u got bucks, go for something like HD580 or even HD600....
although they are twice more expensive, it's worth it. Just bcoz I was skin,
so I bought the HD570.... who doesn't like the best kit?

A Sennheiser HD 580 is 300 ohms will this be a problem ?!
Will I need a headphone amp - and if so, what sort of money
would *that* cost... ?!

I've got a Headroom Airhead. Nice and cheap, and since this is a portable
system, I can replace it pretty easily if it gets lost or stolen or
something... It also sounds much better than you'd think for how cheap it
is.

You don't *need* one but I do recommend one. HD 580 is an excellent choice.
They sound superb. You can always get an amp later.
