i recently aquired a Roland D-5 synth for the pricely sum of Ł50. All the
memory has been set back to defaults (I presume, because all the presets
have no names, and all the performance presets are just split keyboard
versions of the internal wave banks...).
Anyway, is there anythng I can do to entice some useable sound out of it.
Can I somehow transfer patches into it via midi or I am reduced to spending
hours furiously typing away on the unforgiving buttons and the slightly :)
difficult user interface.
All suggestions welcome.
Cheers

You can download sounds into your D-5, it's compatible data wise with the
D-10/20 keyboards, and it will also read D-110 tones. There's tons of stuff
out there for them.

At £50 who can complain....
There should be names in both tone data, and performance data.
I'm only guessing, but perhaps some D-110 data has been loaded into it, as
there is no performance data in D-110's.
I did some digging, and was surprised to find out that there is no way of
resetting the D-5 back to it's factory settings with a "death grip". However
I did find a useful site which may help you:
http://www3.bc.sympatico.ca/epsilon/lapage.htm

Good luck with your £50 synth!

The last time I checked the factory settings were available at

Thanx - thats been really helpful!!
Do you think that if (as I was told) someone plugged it into the mains with
the polarity reversed it would clear the memory??

Depends on how long it was left powered in reversed polarity.
I take it the "wall wart" used to power the D-5 is not the original Roland
power supply?
It sounds (pardon the pun) as if the synth survived it's reversed lobotomy,
the synth functions, and it makes a sound I take it?
Roland may well of had protection built into the synth to protect against
reversed polatity.
Do you get anything on the LCD display, as I wondering if that is faulty?

I think it was only in reverse briefly (yes, with a different power pack) -
and from speaking to the guy he said that it wouldnt come on this way, but
when corrected it came back on fine but with all the patches reset.
Everything now works fine. I got the factory patches from the roland site
and put them in. They are nothing like what was in there before! So I havent
got a clue where all those patches came from!! (Every one of them was named
<internal patch> or something like that and comprised of the keyboard split
into two with an upper tone of a11 and lower of b11 or a12 and b12 etc)
