I run mine off of a 300 milliamp supply from radio shack. The specs actually
call for something beefier but I've had no problems so far. If the manual
says 5.4 watts and it takes 9 volts then the amp rating should be 5.4/9= 600
milliamps.
You can get both versions at radio shack. Make sure you get a DC supply. I'm
not talking down to you, its just the other day I went in and I wasn't
paying attention and I picked up the AC supply version, doh! $20 is a great
price, mine cost $160 and that wasn't a bad price either. Good luck, its a
great little synth. - Brian

You can calculate the amps from the watts and volts. The definition is:
Watts = volts * amps
or in other words:
amps = watts/volts
So, 9V at 5.4 watts is 0.6 amps or 600ma.
As for the polarity, it's usually printed or embossed into the case next
to the connector. If you really can't figure it out, get a power supply
where the polarity is reversible. I would simply try it both ways and
use the one that works. Every piece of DC-powered equipment I've ever
used has a diode to prevent damage from reversed polarity, so you
shouldn't damage anything this way.
If it uses a barrel-type connector, I would try it with the inner
surface at positive polarity and the outer surface at negative. Most
barrel-type power supplies connectors I've used have this
configuration.

For my CZ101 I use a big hulk of a universal supply made to power keyboards:
Gemini AS498 Universal AC/DC Adapter. It does 9 volts DC and all the other 1.5
volt intervals 'twixt 3 and 12 VDC. Max. current is 800 mA--plenty for the
CZ101, at least. I seem to recall something said about the CZ1000 needing
600mA. If so, you're in bidness.
The polarity switch is marked "Y" (for Yamaha): positive tip/negative sleeve.
And "C" for_Casio_: negative tip/positive sleeve. The 101 at least takes a
barrel-shaped connector: FYI, the "tip" is the hole in the center and the
connector with the smaller center hole works best with the 101.
Probably any stray functioning supply that can put out 9VDC/800 or so mA will
do. Splice on the right connector if necessary and observe the correct
negative tip polarity--that's it.
Good luck and have fun with your CZ.

I see you've gotten two conflicting replies regarding the polarity of your
CZ-1000's power connector. If you're looking for a tie-breaker opinion, you
should go with K. Seward's answer, i.e., tip is ground and sleeve is +9V on
the CZ-1000. I've confirmed this on my Casio CZ-101, which is essentially a
CZ-1000 with a mini-keyboard.
You can test it yourself without risk of damage (in case the CZ-1000 isn't
diode protected). First, unplug everything from your CZ-1000, even removing
the batteries for good measure. Then use an ohmmeter to check the continuity
between the power input's tip pin and the sleeve contacts of the "PHONES" and
"LINE OUT" jacks. You'll see that these three points are all electrically
common, i.e., near zero ohms resistance; they are ground. A circuit would
not have supply voltage (+9V) connected to the the audio output jacks.
Also, don't scrimp on supply current. 600mA sounds good. My CZ-101 draws
510mA. I suffered for a long time with a wall wart only rated for 500mA.
After a while, the power LED would start blinking, and would then power off.
Beefing up the power supply fixed everything.

Yes. Ended up trying tip-positive first ( I had not read the most recent
posts) and it didn't work. Switched it around and now it does! I had
forgoten how funky this thing sounds. Brings back some memories and
should get some use periodically in my studio.
Thanks to everyone for the help. I'm always amazed by the speed of
response and willingness to share info that this forum offers.
Now if only I could find that old TR-909 that I sold years ago for $50.
My hip-hop clients can't believe I got rid of it and so do I. oh well...
hindsight is 20/20.
