GigaStudio 2.5 sucks and its tech support sucks even more

I just bought and installed the GigaStudio 160 version 2.5 on my brand
new top-of-the-line machine running Windows XP professional.

The program won't register because it can't recognize the second CD
(gigapiano) and won't create a registration.txt so that I won't be
able to register with Tascam/Nemesys and get the free libraries promo.

I called them up and they said it's a known bug in GigaStudio and
refered me to a place on their website where I can download it. The
link is broken, and the tech support guy is so negligent and
inconsiderate that he wouldn't bother to fix the links nor would he
bother to send me the patch by email, in addition to having to wait a
long time on the phone to speak with them. I had to keep calling him
several times and sending him many emails and he would consistently
ingonre my issue.

I mean this software is supposed to run in Kernel Mode (i.e., would
have OS previliges that supersedes the Administrator rights and can
by-pass the memory protection scheme and read/write to any other
program in memory, including the OS and hardware drivers' memory) and
I've been greeted with dirty bugs from the first minute with this
program. I paid some good money for it so that I can at least get
decent support for it or fix my problem in a reasonable time frame.
But it looks like you get the same support and buggy software as a
pirated or warezed version.

I'm returning this piece of trash to the dealer and start looking from
some other sampler.

I understand your pain. I've had troubles registering GigaStudio even when
everything installed correctly. Their multiple levels of "codes" are a huge
annoyance for legitimate users. I can only hope Nemesys can track returns
and other lost sales due to these hassles, and possibly lighten their
protection schemes in the future.

I'm still using Win98SE, but will soon upgrade to WinXP. At least under '98,
GigaStudio has been a great product for me. Just today, I received Reason 2
in the mail, so I booted up GigaStudio, then ran Sonar 2, then used ReWire
to run Reason. They synced perfectly and I had no other software issues.
Truly cool!

But, the value of GigaStudio is waning on me. I'd be just as happy with a
VSTi or DXi synth that could import GigaStudio libraries. The fact that I
need to dedicate a set of physical outs on my soundcard to GigaStudio is now
more hassle than convenience. I hope the next version of GigaStudio allows
it to be a VSTi or DXi client, but I highly doubt they'd do that. No
matter -- there's plenty of other software samplers coming out, and
ChickenSys' Translator will let me use my existing GigaStudio sound
libraries with them.

They have improved in some ways. Just a year ago, I was told that I
absolutely could NOT sell my Gigastudio 160. Then, just a few months
ago, I asked again, and was emailed some forms to fill out to allow me
to transfer registration.

Make sure your soundcard has XP GSIF drivers, because GS will NOT
support DirectSound on soundcards in XP/2000

It was great just a few years ago, but there are soo many great
Samplers out there, that I'm not impressed much anymore. In fact, I
just purchased Kontakt as a replacement.

I don't like having disks crammed into me...
unless they're Oreos, and then only in the mouth

I assumed Kontakt focused on being a formant-based sampler. Is it also great
at traditional (non time-stretched) sampling duties? Also, can it import
GigaStudio sounds?

Thanks,
