Hi,

I've got a 586 with W95 and am looking into a computer based sequencer. I
want nothing fancy...I have worked with Music Shop (By Opticode I believe)
but that was on a Mac.

I'm looking for something just like Music Shop but for Windows 95. You
know, a 16 track sequencer...with a few little extras. Could someone
please get me headed in the right way.

Also, what kind of interface would I need for teh computer?

Thanks,
Van

Personally, I really like the Evolution range of sequencers
(http://www.evolution-uk.com/). They are (relatively) very cheap and very
powerful. They are pattern based - you can make 'virtual' copies of
patterns so that when you change the original, all the copies change also
(similar to the way Cubase does it). You can get save disabled eval
version from their Web site. I got Evolution MIDI free on a magazine CD
and now use it in preference to my early copy of Cubase for Windows
(which kept crashing on me). I intend buying Evolution Audio ASAP which
has .WAV file support (ie it can play audio samples along with the MIDI
sequence).

You will need a MIDI interface to use any sequencer. The Roland MPU401
used to be the 'standard' MIDI card, but most Soundblaster compatible
soundcards now have a built in single port MIDI interface (which is wired
to the joystick port), though you will probably need to buy a special
cable to get at the MIDI connectors. If you think you'll need more than
16 channels of MIDI you should probably go for one of the special
multi-port interfaces, though these cost more. I've actually got a
Soundblaster 16 in my PC, with a Roland MPU type MIDI card as well, to
give me 2 MIDI ports (ie 32 channels), but it took a bit of fiddling with
IRQ's & stuff to get it working.

Hope this helps!
