The seller was
NED ELIASON
GREAT NORTHERN TRADING COMPANY
(800) 553-GNTC or (218) 525-6678
When I called him after the unit did not arrive in a reasonable amount
of time (he had already charged my credit card), he claimed that he
had dropped it while moving it, and was having someone check it out
because he was an honest guy and didn't want to ship broken
merchandise (he could, after all, ship it broken and blame it on UPS,
he said).
I called him after not hearing back from him after another two days to
ask about it, and he said sorry, it was indeed broken and he wouldn't
sell it in that condition. He said he'd reverse the card transaction.
This has not yet happened.
When I posted a want ad for a DA-30 here yesterday, mentioning offhand
that I had a deal that fell through because of a dropped unit, a
reader with a sharp eye emailed me to say he'd gotten the exact same
story, for the same piece of equipment, from the same guy.
My guy claimed to be a RAM chip salesman from Toledo, with his 800
number forwarded to his cell-phone because he did so many trade shows.
(He even charged me PA sales tax since he claimed to be licensed to do
business in Pennsylvania, and mentioned a real trade show at the
Monroeville Expo Mart.) The other victim told me his guy was
somewhere in Minnesota, with the phone number (218) 525-6678.

I just spoke with him again and he claims that the unit has been
repaired and will be on its way to me via FedEx on Monday morning. He
also claims that the other person I talked to told him that he didn't
want it.
We shall see. If the unit arrives Tuesday, I will post a retraction.

Ben,
What about the people that might read your overzealous warning and DON'T
see a retraction for any number of reasons like server outages, expired
articles, etc??
Will the profit that they are making be more than the possible lack of sales
from your post? Maybe, maybe not.
I'm glad you are not in the news media.
Also, a slight clue here.... the phone number is an 800 number with the
initials of the company. Another number with an area code is provided
also. This requires a considerable investment and it's rather easy to
check up on an established company. I doubt they would pack up shop after
taking you for a DAT machine.
Your posts and others who WARN first and retract later, do more harm than good.
I've bought and sold thousands of dollars through the Internet and never
been ripped off yet.
I would be quicker to post the names of the people who put up posts like
yours for the SELLERS. This way they can decide if they want to do
business with a possible "problem person" or crybaby.

I sold a Panasonic SV-3700 to Mr. Eliason about three years ago. At the
time, his check bounced upon the first pass through the bank, but cleared
a second time several weeks later. Also, at that time, he was not doing
business as G.N.T.C., but simply as an individual broker (back then, I
think, it was still as a composer or something).
I have since heard multiple stories similar to mine and the one above.
It's my opinion that the guy's probably OK but just has serious cash flow
problems. Anybody else who deals with him, just be aware of this.

I met the seller in person over the weekend (alas, he didn't have the
unit with him) and he seemed like a reasonable guy. I do expect to
receive the unit tomorrow, though I don't have a tracking number or
anything. It seems to me that circumastances may have got out of his
control and he may simply have dealt with them in a suboptimal way
that made the story sound fishy (to more than just me).
(Special Note to "Kevin <maj...@leonardo.net>": He's had my money for 2
weeks now, so I don't think I'm being particularly unreasonable to post
a warning here. Don't twist your ankle jumping off your high horse.)
Either way, I will know in the next 36 hours and will post here.

I ordered a SampleCell I for $300 and a studio 4 interface for $200 from
Mr. Eliason a couple of weeks ago. i ordered on friday, he said the pieces
would ship monday 2nd day air. I expected the pieces on wednesday, and
when they didn't arrive I gave him a call. He said he shipped them that
morning. Sure enough on friday I recieved a samplecell I in perfect
operating condition in original box complete with manuals, updated driver
and editor software and the 600 meg CD (however, it was shipped UPS
ground). However, there was no studio 4. I called him up and he told me
that he had dropped it along with a DAT machine. he said that he took the
pieces in for repair/checkout. i just spoke with him ten minutes ago and
he said that the Studio 4 checked out fine and he's shipping it 2nd day
air today. I think that Mr. Eliason is legit, it can be a bit tricky when
goods relegated to other people get broken. the samplecell i ordered from
him works fine even if it was shipped ground instead of two day. If the
studio 4 does not arrive wednesday in functional condition I will post
another note, if you do not hear from me again assume that the deal went
off without a hitch.
After much shuffling, I have received the DA-30 in good condition.
I don't think he was scamming us (several other people got stories
that sounded strange from him too); I just think he ran into some bad
luck while moving the gear and didn't give us the full info on what
happened with it. While this is not the best way to do things, it is
acceptable and I am satisfied with the resolution of our deal.
I appreciate the email from people who saw this and contacted me.
