I'd like to find a rack mounted module to hook up to a Roland JV-35
keyboard. Specifically, I'm looking for one with good Mellotron samples
(Hammond B-3 would be nice too, though not essential). Any suggestions?

Look for something with 4 1/2 megabytes per voice (128K per note) minimum.
The Beccmar has this, but is still a little primitive by most MIDI module standards.

Check out the rackmount version of the Alesis QS7 & * (Sorry Can't
remember the name). It has several good Mellotron sounds, Keith Emmerson's
B3, and a ton of other juicy sounds all oozing out.

Peace,

Rob

Basically what I am saying is a Mellotron-like module should be a sampler,
because that is what the Mellotron was. The more memory there is for
sample storage the better the instrument will emulate the Mellotron.

That is a ROM-based Mellotron MIDI sound module. I don't know if there
are others like it.

The best Mellotron samples I've heard are on Emu's Classic Keys, the
Vintage Keys are probably even better. There are also several B-3 samples
as well as Moogs, ARPs, Farfisa, WurliTzers, and more. Rolands Vintage Synth
module had a pretty good Mellotron flute sound but overall I believe the
Classic/Vintage Keys are much better units. I got my Classic Keys at
Guitar Center for $400. Musician's Friend has both the Classic Keys and
the Roland Vintage Synth for about $400 each. Daniel.

A JV1080 with the "Keybaords of the 60's and 70's" expansion card would be one
option: it is one of the few synths I know of with Mellotron samples, and it
also has great B3 samples, as well. Actually, here's another idea: buy an
XP50 or XP80 and get rid of the JV-35. XP50 and XP80 have the same synth
engine, and the same expansion possibilities as the JV1080. Another option:
get the JV2080, the new version of the JV1080 that holds 8 expansion cards
instead of the 4 you can add to the JV1080/XP50/XP80.

But do you want a sample of a Mellotron? Or samples of the sounds the
Mellotron sampled (ie:flutes,strings,choir,etc...)? A sample of a
Mellotron flute would be a sample of a tape recording of a flute and would
sound different from a sample of a real flute. A 'Mellotron-like' module
would be just a sampler like an Emu Emulator. I don't know of any MIDI
modules that are dedicated to only Mellotron samples.

I couldn't find anything of the kind, so I went ahead and started building one,
using EPROM's to hold the samples, which were supplied by my Mellotron. It
isn't compact like the modules you usually see, but it's much smaller than
my Mellotron and I can play it from Passport Rhapsody if I care to.
