Do I go with the AN1x or the JP8000?...
I already have a CS2x and love it...
please let me know which one I should go for...
Don't underestimate the knobs and sliders because they make
creating/controlling sounds a lot more fun. And fun is an important factor
in music. The AN1x is also available as a soundcard plugin-board but then
you will have to have a card to plug it in(SW1000xg). But maybe in the
future these little daughterboards will be very cheap and maybe a cheap
board to plug them in will be available...

I bought a JP8000 and returned it to buy an AN1x. The JP is more fun to
use but it sounds like Roland. The AN1x can sound like Moog, OB,
Prophet, CS and sometimes very digital. Once you get accustomed to the
O/S of the AN1x, it's as easy as the JP8000. I can program my AN1x with
my eyes closed.

If you can use the Internet, you can program Arppegiator/Sequencer of
the AN1x. But I recommend the Yamaha AN1x editor, the best editor I've
ever used (I've used editors since 1988). The AN1x editor is so
intuitive that it's impossible not to create killer patches. What's
more, the AN1x editor has a really cool random patch generator. I would
say 1 out of 10 times the random patch generator creates a totally
unique sound. BTW, there's a free AN1x sound bank called "Roland
Impressions". It contains most of the JP8000 presets. I know the sound
quality is subjective, but to me the same patches sound punchier &
thicker on my AN1x than on the JP8000 that I returned.

Wow...thanks for the info...It's funny, out of the almost 20 people who
responded, half of the said they own a JP and wish they've gone with an
AN1x...surprising since the JP has been so popular in the markets the past
couple of years...thanks again for all your help, I'm quite impressed as to
how informative this newsgroup is...most newsgroups are full of crap but
this one seems to be just fine...thanks again!
The arppegiator isn't programmable but it's flexible and nearly always turns
up with a good arp. If you drive your synth from a PC you can get a free
MIDI arpeggiator from AnalogX (www.analogx.com) which is simple and
programmable, someone else does an eight bank arp, try www.technotoys.com I
think it's shareware but it's very flexible and does velocity etc.
I liked both the AN1x and the JP8000, in the end I bought the AN as the
sounds weren't that different and with the money I 'saved' I bought a
drumbox. Instant joy!
No AN1x for me !

Another vote for the AN1x:
I was in your position 2 years ago. I went with the AN1x. It was just
soooooo much more fun to play, despite having fewer knobs than the JP has
sliders. The JP looks cool, but once you get into it (and there's not much
more you can get into), its appeal wears off very quickly. It just seemed
very one-dimensional to me, and it only has two kinds of effects: reverb and
chorus. It also only has 8 voices.
The AN1x has every type of effect imaginable (well, almost, but WAY more
than the JP has) - delay (syncable to MIDI or internal clock tempo), wah,
tremolo, distortion, compressor, etc. etc. The only thing I didn't like
about the AN1x was that its very fragile (you owning a CS2x already know
what that's like...I chipped the underside of a key) and that the sequencer
thing is hard to figure out. But play an AN and a JP side by side, you'll
find out that for some reason, the AN is loads more fun to play.
