I've started digging into this instrument, and I think I can do all kinds of
wonderful things with it if I can just edit the thing. The front panel of it
is packed with knobs and switches on a 1 rack space form factor, so editing
from the front won't be happening.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Rick, I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but I found some
information and the link on the Audiofarm site:
http://www.audiofarm.org/pages/36
Text from the site follows (sorry for the long post):
The Novation A-station is a very pleasant VA synthesizer. But editing can
be a bit frustrating with all those double functioned knobs and two-digit
codes. So I decided to make a simple editor for it and share it with
everyone else. This is the download link:
www.hermaxmusic.be/Astation/A-Station Editor.zip
Some more explanation (this is the Readme.txt file):
A-Station Editor:
I created and tested this application on a Dell Dimension 3000 computer
with Microsoft Windows XP Home edition. I can give not a single guarantee
that it will work on other systems. This application is free of use for
anyone, but I don’t accept any responsability for possible malfunctions
that may be caused by it. Don’t start this application if you are not
happy with that…
Now, having that said, there is hardly anything that this application can
do wrong because it only sends sysex sound dumps to the temporary memory
of your A-station. Turn your A-station off and everything is back to
normal. This means that you manually have to save the patch on your A-
station when you’re done editting and you want to save your new killer
patch.
What it does: - Request a sound dump of the actual selected patch. - (or)
Load a sysex file of a single patch previously saved on your computer. -
Edit all parameters as you like. - Click on a blank part of the screen to
send the edited sound back to your A-station. - Save the patch manually
on your A-station. - (and/or) Save your edited patch as a single sysex
file on your computer.
Some notes: - At first use, open the “Midi and Sysex” screen and select
the Midi In and Out Ports. (Don’t forget to attach both in and out midi
cables to and from your A-station) These settings will be saved in a
little file (A.cfg). - Disconnect any midi controller or keyboard that
sends continuous midi out information. This causes the application to
freeze after receiving sysex/in data. (At least, that is the case on my
system, with the ESI M8U midi interface) - After loading a sysex file
from your computer you have to send the patch to the A-station manually.
Application written in Microsoft Visual Basic 6. Sysex in/out module
created by Buzz Hansen. Sliders, Knobs and Selectors created by Jürgen
Moßgraber.
Feedback is welcome at info-at-hermaxmusic.be but I can make no promises
about further enhancements or bug fixing.
Bother, the link to the editor is not clickable, as it has a space in it, I
think it needs to be cut and pasted.
Here it is, again:

Looks interesting.I was thinking more of the program Novation made for it,
but this might help as well, especially if it'll let me use the advanced
functions of the machine and also lets me navigate without the mouse.
Hi Rick, I don't recall seeing anything on Novation's site previously about
anything besides template editors?
You might want to email sales AT novationmusic.com rather than use their
contact page, and have them pass on your questions. I think I had to email
them a couple of years ago, and they were pretty responsive.
There is also a company called Soundquest that sells an universal
editor/librarian. The site is a bit cryptic to me, though. I think you
have to buy either Midiquest 10 ($249 download), or Midiquest 10 XL ($369
download - the DVD version is $30 more for either) or Uniquest 9 ($99,
download only).
That site is:
http://www.squest.com
and the email is midiquestsupport AT squest.com
you might want to email them too for some further info.
From what I was told, there was a page or sheet in the manual or with the
manual for the A-Station that directed the purchaser of the module to where
to find the editor, but I've been unable to locate that page in my manual.
(In fact, I'm not even sure where my manual is -- the gremlins are moving
things around here again)

Hi Rick, well, I can point you to the download link for the manual, if it
helps. It's a .pdf file, 1.61 Mb:
http://www.novationmusic.com/files/A-Station_manual_UK.pdf
A brief scan doesn't reveal anything to me, though, nor in the brochure,
here is that link:
http://www.novationmusic.com/files/A-Station_brochure_UK.pdf
In looking at the CD that came with my X-Station, I see that there was an
addendum to the manual that had some new features in the latest operating
system at that time. Do you have your CD around somewhere?
And I've gotten the manual from them, and read it through, but there's no
mention of it in it.
