korg ds 8 vs. yamaha fm's...

just asking as there seem to be loads of posts on fm's today...i can
just see the price of these things skyrocketing, stores prolly add 5$
for each post where someone says something cool about fm...
anyway,
i have a ds8 and was wondering how it compared to "real" yamaha fm.
i've never extensively played with a yam. fm, but i've heard lots of
nice harsh, cold, sharp and piercing fm sounds on records that the ds8
cannot quite recreate...but maybe it's just good eq. so anyone familiar
with fm out there who can compare the two?
another interesting point is that my roland mks70 can sound *exactly*
like the ds8 if i want it to. guess that's dco xmod for you.

The DS8 uses the Yamaha YM2164/YM3012 OPS/DAC chip set which is the same
as the Yamaha FB-01. The Korg is a four-operator, two algorithm FM
synthesizer which is programmed using "standard" and familar sythesizer
terms such as oscillator, filter, ring modulator, envelope, etc. The two
algorithms correspond to algorithm 4 and 5 on other Yamaha FM gear such
as the DX7. This is why you can't get as sophisticated sounds as you can
with other FM synths. Korg has a ROM sound card that greatly improves
upon the factory sounds and there is an indepth book published by
Alexander Publishing that gets deep into the programming of the DS8.
