I'm in need of a sampler for doing everything from drum loops to voices.
I am working on electronic music and it will be complementing recycle, a
basstation, CS1X, and of course, rebirth!
They say the Emax II has a synth section but it is difficult to upgrade
memory, and max is 8MB and it has a keyboard. The s2000 though is a rack
unit with lots of memory and some filters similar to the Emax II.

Any opinions? From what I see the emax II and the s2000 are priced about the
same at about $650 used.

I would go for the S2000. If you want a less dated EMU in that price range,
go for the ESI-32 and get the 3.02 OS update.
In addition to a few other features, the 3.02 software adds 18 new filters.
The filters are a little "soft" but they have
character. My most recent sampler switch was from an S2000 to (ESI-32 while
waiting for the first unit) an ESI-4000. Although I enjoyed the synth
engine and sound of the S2000, the ESI's are much more feature laden with a
better interface. They do lack a little in the modulation department.

No.No.No
The S2000 filters are not similar to the emax2. If you want to create
new sounds (aditive /subtractive and digital interpolation synthesis) go
to the emax (there is no sampler similar to it). If you want to mess
around recycle and with sample CDROMs then you must go to the S2000
(Forget the emax)....
