Ghandhi grew up in South Africa, didn't he? Don't they still play Anglo
concertinas in South Africa, and call them "squashboxes?" Any
connection?

What a lovely quote. If ever I get bored with the current quote at the
head of the FAQ I'll substitute this one instead.

I'm reading 'Gandhi, an Autobiography. The Story of My
Experiments with Truth'. In the chapter describing his
childhood (pg. 7) he describes a a play which had a deep effect
on him (Shravana Pitribhakti Nataka) and states;

"The agonized lament of the parents over Shravana's death is
still fresh in my memory. The melting tune moved me deeply, and
I played it on a concertina which my father had purchased for
me."

I'm not too far in to the book, so I can't tell if he mentions
playing the concertina at any other point in his life. Believe
it or not, they neglected to mention concertinas in the index.
Also, no mention of English, Anglo or some Indian method. Where
were his priorities? ;-)

Peace and good bellows,

Oh, thanks, this is a great tidbit for my new collection of Famous People
who play/played Squeezeboxes. I hope I am not duplicating someone else's
effort. I remember someone asked a while ago if anybody was compiling
these, and nobody piped up so I decided to do it. Please see the results
at http://www.hmtrad.com/hmtrad/wendy/sbx-fame.html

Jeroen, you might want to add a link to your collection. Also see the
newly created "Squeezeboxes on the Tube" page at
http://www.hmtrad.com/hmtrad/wendy/sbx-TV.html

Maggie, I put in a link to your "Squeezeboxes on the Silver Screen" page
on my links page. Hope I got the URL right, I was in a hurry to go home.

Done. They are under
http://www.th.rug.nl/~nijhof/accordions.html#general .
I've also added a link to Phoebe's accordion poetry page
on my poetry page (http://www.th.rug.nl/~nijhof/poemsnovels.html#poems ):
I hadn't done that yet. I was reminded of it after I saw
Don Larson's poem from that page appearing in a Dutch accordion magazine!
And I've added a link to Maki Takiya's melodeon page:
http://www.yk.rim.or.jp/~maki_t/homepage.html
There is only one problem with them: they are in Japanese!
The pictures are nice, though.

Another silly quibble: it is possible that he meant a harmonium, a very
popular instument in India, though less so in So Africa (I think). I've
also heard Indians refer to the harmonium as a `squeezbox' or
`concertina'.

Ah, nuts. He said `concertina', he meant `concertina'.
