I have a Jeffries concertina which I bought about 10 years ago from
Hobgoblin in Crawley. At the time I was playing a C/G Lachenal type
and wanted something better and more useful for session playing, but I
reached the limit of my musicality a few years back and I now think
the time has come to sell - preferably to someone who will play it,
but I do need to get as good a price as I can. I live in Cornwall, UK.

The instrument itself is 38 key (including drone) G/D, 7 fold black
bellows with gold tooling around the ends (the bellows are pretty
airtight, but papers have been blacked over). It has metal ends
stamped 'C JEFFRIES MAKER'. The pattern of the piercing looks to be
exactly the same as shown in the pictures on
http://www.concertina.net/guide_jeffries.html, but the ends have a 1"
pierced gallery which I don't believe can be original although nicely
done and good for the sound.

I have not done any work on the instrument itself, but it had been
repadded and possibly retuned (it is concert pitch) by Hobgoblin when
I bought it. There is no case.

Any advice on price or best route to a sale gratefully received.

A few months ago I bought an instrument similar to this, but fully
renovated (new bellows, even newly replated ends etc) from Chris Algar
for a little over 3000 quid. Yours won't be worth so much, but you do
have a potentially very valuable instrument there.

G/Ds sell best in England and are becoming very popular here, because
they suit our music well, and Jeffries G/D anglos are definitely the
session aristocrats. There is little market for them in Ireland and not
a very large one for them in the States because they are hung up on
C/Gs. Thus I personally don't think that eBay would be a good outlet for
this box unless you set a pretty high reserve price.

There is a for sale section at www.concertina.net which is worth using -
lots of UK readers of that site. Also you might wish to contact Chris
Algar. Although he won't give you the full market value of your
instrument - he has to make his profit - he will give you a fair price.

Although I would class the staff at Hobgoblin as mates, I don't think that
they are the best people to sell through. They'll drool over it, and then
offer you an insulting amount.
If you can't find a private buyer then Chris Algar is the dealer of choice.
Have you tried the West Country Concertina Club (details from
http://hmi.homewood.net/tinafaq/conc-clu.htm ). They used to offer a
concertina brokering service which worked very well.(and they used to visit
Callington regularly)

Please don't use this address, this copy of the FAQ is over 6 years out
of date (including the contact address for the WCCP). It was originally
put up on my behalf by Bob Tedrow as a US mirror of my site, but
unfortunately he has never updated it.

Please use the address http://www.concertina.info/conc-clu.htm

Not all of us... I wouldn't at all mind having a G/D as well, though I'm
not sure I could justify the investment. Let us know where/how you
decide to sell it so I can at least tempt myself... <grin/>

Try posting the same request on Concertina.net (go to
http://www.concertina.net and the rest should be self explanatory). You
should get excellent response, as anglo-philes are heavily represented
there.

Good luck, /Jim Lucas

Thanks to everyone who replied here or by e-mail. I now have several
ideas of how to sell, though having got it out again and had a
twiddle, I'm not sure I can bear to let it go!
