Hello World

Anyone still using the korg i40m arranger with midi accordion ?
I do and I like it more and more!

Beside of the great sounds, compactness (all-in-one solution) and the
huge amount of styles & software to be downloaded free on the web, the
i40m has a feature I never found on any other arranger on the market.
The (left hand) chord recognition uses TWO distinct midi channels
(2=chords AND 3=bass)!

This feature allows the accordionist to play rich chords (i.e. m6, m7,
maj7, etc.) on the left hand, wich are more than usefull while playing
jazz, bossa, tango, etc.

If you use a i40m, you may try i.e. Am7 = A (counterbass) + Cmaj
(chord), then the i40m plays Am7 (A,C,E,G) accompaniment (Am7 appears
on the display). Try "min" + "7dim" chords to get a "m6"
accompaniment. For maj7 chord (more difficult to reach) i.e. Cmaj7 = C
(bass = pinkie) + Em (chord = index finger) = Cmaj7 (C,E,G,B) comping.

Any comments on this subject and the i40m are welcome
Enjoy & best regards

Jean-Claude

Hello Jean-Claude,
I'm so happy to see that someone else uses the i40m with the midi. I
started with the i5m several years ago and I now have two i40m's and
the i5m (if anyone is interested, I'd be willing to sell my i5m). I
use my module in a very unsophisticated manner, SMFs, and the on board
accompaniments. This groups' ‘expert in residence' is Ventura. He is
the only other midi accordion/i40m user that I know of. He has
answered questions and made recommendations that were all valuable.
Ventura actually understands the manual and knows how to use the i40
the way I think Korg intended. I play out a couple of times a week
and luckily, it has been extremely reliable – not 1 problem over
several years of use. I'll be looking forward to Ventura's response
and I hope you can come up with questions that will help all (3) of us
i40m users.
Regards,
Jerry Trecroce

i use a midi accordion but i don't like arrangers...i only use a ketron
module to ad a snare and basdrum to the bases of the accordion, when i press
a c bass , then also the basrum is sounding, when i press a chord, also the
snare is sounding, the sounds i use are from an odysse orchestra pro
cavagnolo,

if i wanted accopagnemends with cmaj7 or am7 or c cros11, i should play the
accomagnements with the right hand, and record them for backing.....this i
like more than an arranger,

on the ketron module it'snot possible to combinate the bas and chords like
you do, but i did this osme months ago on a yamaha module....

have a nice day,

Also for Len

Actually, I still prefer the older, I5 series. The
reason is simply that the user interface grew out of
the rish legacy of Korg and Unicord Drum machines.

the I5 simply has the best user interface ever done
if you are purely using it in a Drum machine (sideman) mode.

The I40 improved the sample set by devoting more memory to it,
and the large display is useful for scrolling lyrics and
a few other stupid pet tricks... but it is also wider,
heavier, and fatter.

Yes, it is interesting that you can assign several
different models of scanning for the interactive
accompaniment. Personally, the only time I use that
part of the module is when I need to woodshed a
MIDI file quickly for further editing. Then I set
the thing to scan the treble keys, and chord with my
right hand while the Computer captures the MIDI data stream.

This gives me a nice file to work from without having
to go from scratch. Similar to whipping out one with
band in a Box, but the intros, endings, backgrounds,
breaks and such are so much better on the Korg, and
I have the big pedal thingie so can easily control the
pattern intensity as I like while the song progresses.

but I never use the "squirrels in a cage" live
on a gig... just not my cup of tea.

These were designed and built in Italy, by the way,
just down the road from CastleFi.

It is a shame, really, that Korg and Roland gave
up their work in the interactive module part of
the market.

Ciao Ventura
