Hi,

Does anyone out there know what system accordion Tony MacMahon
plays? Is it B/C or C#/D? Or something else? I had always assumed that it was
B/C, but could easily be wrong. Anyways, thanks,

Not sure, but I think it is B/C.
What I do know for sure is that he tunes it about 1/2 step sharp.
This is very obvious on the albums he did with Noel Hill.
They are both tuned 1/2 step sharp and you can't play along with anything
on the CD.
(As if I could anyway :-)
In a print interview, I believe he said something about preferring to do so
because it is brighter.

Hi,

Tony has recorded all 3 albums (his one solo album and the 2 he did with
Noel Hill) using a D/D# box. On his solo album he actually played the box
that once belonged to Joe Cooley. It "may" have also been used on the other
albums, but at least a box in the same "keys" was used on them.

I know for a fact that he also owns one or more C#/D boxes - I played the
one Dougie Briggs made for him, which was played by a young kid, possibly
one of his pupils, last year at the Willie Clancy Summer School (and for
the price Briggs sells them these days, it didn't impress me at all).

Han.

Dan,

I've not met Tony, but according to Paddy
O'Brien, Tony started out years ago on
B/C, then switched to C#/D when he
became friends with Joe Cooley. The
last two recordings I have of MacMahon,
he's playing Cooley's old D/D# box.

I think Tony McMahon plays a D/D# box. In fact, I think he plays the box
formerly owned by Joe Cooley. Playing this box on the inside row, as you would
play a C#/D box, transposes everything up a semi-tone.
