I like playing Zingarella, the Valse Musette tune by Joseph Colombo, but
whenever I do, the first half-dozen bars of the 'Trio' section remind me of
the start of 'We'll meet again' - the wartime song made famous by Vera Lynn.
Makes me wonder if there was some cross-fertilisation.

Anyone know which came first? According to
http://www.rienzihills.com/AmericaSing/wellmetagain.htm, the words & music
of 'We'll Meet Again' were written by Ross Parker & Hughie Charles in 1939.
But since Joseph Colombo lived from 1900 to 1973 (according - I think - to
this Japanese website
http://musette-web.hp.infoseek.co.jp/acconiste/colombo.htm), there's plenty
of overlap.

Just curious...

I haven't an answer but I have been trying to find info on Joseph Colombo. I
have the music for Zingarella but hadn't got the idea of the 'We'll Meet
Again' from it though.
None of the Japenese CD icons seems to work which is a shame as I would have
liked to hear some of it.

Temprance,

Did you try http://www.rienzihills.com/AmericaSing/wellmetagain.htm? When I
click that, the computer automatically plays the tune of 'We'll Meet Again'
(assuming Windows Media Player is installed).

When I've played Zingarella a few people have said 'that bit [the Trio
section] sounds like Vera Lynn's song' . I don't think it's entirely down
to the fact that I'm not a great accordionist - although that is definitely
true :-)

David.

Have you come across any more of Joseph Colombo's music. A tune I just had a
message about is called Suzy-Suzon but I can't find any info.

Temprance,

I've seen a few in the compilation books published by the company Paul
Bescher (27 Boulevard Beaumarchais, 75004, Paris). The books are called
'Receuil de 110 Succes Musette' (meaning I think: 'Collection of 110
Musette Hits') and there were five volumes in 1984. They contain all kinds
of French-style accordion music. I have volumes 3 and 4. There's no author
index but at a quick look, Vol 3 contains Indifference, Nany, & Meprise.
Vol 4 has Valse Chinoise all at least partially by Colombo.

One point to watch. They seem to come in two versions. Some have chords
symbols written as A, B, C etc. The others have French-style chord symbols:
La, Si, Do, etc.

David.

I'm looking for a copy of the Chinoise Valse or a jpg particularly. Somebody
has sent me a couple of Valses but I can't buy the books. No longer
available.

Are you sure they're not available? In the last month I bought the 6
Beuscher Musette volumes from Chamberlain Music (sheet music supplier)
here in the UK (www.chamberlainmusic.com). Most of the Beuscher volumes
are also still available from www.amazon.fr - go to their main page and
search for "musette 110" and they're in the French books section. Valse
Chinoise is in volume 4, pages 186-187. Lovely piece. If you draw a
complete blank let me know and I'll post you a photocopy of those two
pages. But I would recommend getting the books if you can.

I have tried to get them and Amazon Uk certainly don't any. I was hoping
just to buy the Valse Chinoise. I just spotted the price for the Vol 4 on
Chamberlain site. Eeek. That's a no no. It doesn't list the Composers and
tunes either on the web.
A photocopy would be good. I'm Scotland as well.

I know: I directed you to French Amazon, i.e. www.amazon.fr - you can
order directly from there and they'll post internationally. Their prices
are a bit cheaper than Chamberlain too, at Euro rates, although postage
is more expensive than ordering in UK, and delivery would be slower too.

It is a lot: good value if you want 110 musette pieces per volume, to
take a lifetime to learn properly. It's not so good for just a couple of
tunes. However if you like this style of music the books are highly
recommended: very easy to play, very authentic French sounding, and an
enormous number of musette pieces. Even if you're just looking for a
couple at the moment there are many more that you may enjoy playing.

> tunes either on the web.

The tunes (though not composers) per volume used to be listed in the
publisher's website at www.paul-beuscher.com though that's being
redesigned now. That's how I tracked down the volume (2) containing the
musette piece I wanted most (Martelette) before giving in and ordering
the other volumes too. Now I've 660 musette pieces to learn ...

Email me directly with your postal details and I'll be in touch. I tried
to email you directly but your email address here is so munged (and
varying each time you post) I couldn't send an email to you ok.

Following myself up here, the titles per volume (though not composers)
are listed in the French Amazon listings of the books. Again go to
www.amazon.fr (must be the French Amazon site, not one of the others)
and search for "110 musette". 5 of the volumes are available this way.
