I have a piano accordion that my late Uncle bought back in the 1950's. The
name on it is Cellini and that's just about the only markings it has on it!
<aside from the bottom which if I remember correctly..has an M and a few
numbers..oh...and that it's from Italy>

Does anyone have _any_ information about this Cellini for me? I would
greatly appreciate it!

Thank u :)

I've heard of the brand, and that LMMM set up suggests that it was not a
cheapy in its day. I suggest you look at Wendy Morrison's squeezebox info
pages at www.hmtrad.com

Didn't find any information on her site about Cellini accordions. Do you
happen to know any specifics on this brand?

Anyone?

I have a Cellini, similar to the one on ebay. Mine was owned (no kidding) by
a little old lady who had to go to a nursing home. She took her nice little
12 bass with her, but the 120 Cellini was too big for her to handle. From my
experience, it's a well made instrument...mine is pretty, and nice and tight.
It's tone is a bit on the saxophone/clarinet side, no matter which register
you play in. It's no lightweight, except in comparison to the Semitino
Soprani that I play. Al Goss In article

It seems that only the heavy full size accordions come with hand made
reeds and tone chambers. Have there been any smaller accordions made
with these features? It seems there would be a market for a small
portable accordion with a great sound.

Yes there is small accordions with tone chambers. Sonola had one the
"Ernie Felice" model SS4. In fact there was one of those on Ebay last
week. Also LoDuca had one some of the "Dukes" had tone chamber and
3/5 handmade reeds.

Not quite the same as a tone chamber but I have a little 14 inch keyboard
"Balearica" model that has a switchable mute in the grille that almost does
what a tone chamber does. It has a great clean sound either a little reedy or
not depending on the switch setting and is great for jazz music! So they do
have some quality in the smaller boxes. The reeds in this box are also set in
dark stained walnut type of wood and looks as beautiful inside as out!

Ciao! for now!

The Settimio Soprani during one period of that makers existence had reed
bars mounted across the valve plate, e.g. about 10 or 11 reed bars in a 3 or
4 set treble. These 'acoustic' reed bars were so well made, that they
sounded almost as good as having a tone chamber. Settimio Soprani was taken
over by barbarians in its last years who believed that this was too
expensive. They then commenced to make very average ordinary accordions. The
acoustic reed bars were connected by aluminum strips to transmit the tone
between the reed bars. The best known model of that type was the 4/5 S.S.
'Cardinal'. These accordions did not weigh a lot compared to most tone
chamber accordions. I think they sound better than the Titano 'tube chamber'
kind. The many reed bars were very carefully constructed to have the right
size reed chambers. Maybe someone out there knows more about the acoustic
theory of it than I. They were probably too labor intensive to make after
the 1950's.

You can sometimes make a type of chamber by putting newspaper under the
front grill. The newspaper is a hard surface that the sound bounces off of.

closed shut. lovely design. Beautiful almost electric sound to it.

Hiya Ike

Just thought I'd chip in that I am the proud owner of a Settimio Soprani
Cardinal. 4-voice, double octave tuned 120 bass with 4 big elliptical
"muting" dishes on the treble grill. It sounds lovely. I've had it since
about 1974. My father paid £35.00 for it in the "snips".

Cheers

Goodness, yes. These accordions are still being made. Guerrini, for
one, makes both 72 bass and 96 bass accordions with either 3 or 4
reeds, which can be custom ordered with tone chamber and handmade reeds
if desired. I'm sure there are others - Beltuna comes to mind. However,
they aren't as lightweight as some of us might like. I'd expect 22 lbs
and up.

That might dampen the sound somewhat.
