I am looking to purchase a button accordion for my wife. She is
originally from Newfoundland and grew up playing a Hohner Erica A/D.

Knowing little about playing, I was wondering if anyone could suggest
a particular accordion and key that would be best suited to
traditional Newfoundland music.

I was also wondering what the difference in sound is between a Hohner
Corona and an Erica?

Thanks - Jim Boyd

Have you investigated the music by Felix et Formanger
Bass guitar and a 23 row ADG (large Italian number)

The sound of the Erica and the Corona is similar...
both having the same number (2 reeds) voicing and reed block
construction is similar..

The Erica is lighter and faster...

The Corona is still light and fast for a 3 row and in fact the third
row has only one more (different) note than a 2 row of the same key
system as in GCF the F row has Bb plaus 2 more accidentals at the
top (one button in and out)
BUT.....its the expanded ability to play right hand chords and
reversed notes that smooth out and speed up the play and reduce the
bellows movement in and out...

GCF is almost the universal key system for a 3 row...Quebec and Tex
Mex for sure.. check out reyesaccordions.com open forum for some
Conjunto Tex Mex conversation and there is a YAhoo group for Quebec
trad music..

Also depends if you are buying new or used...some of the Hohners are
now made in China.. word has it that the Corona Classic is still made
in Germany but some folks have expressed doubt.. also it is classic
in name only nothing like the early 70's model it attempted to
recreate..
I just sold a mint early 70's GCF pearloid covered wood keyboard..
large flat buttons raised grill, "T" reeds etc...
look had and you can find a decent one $500-800 and a new "classic "
discounted is close to $900

Used Ericas can be had $200-600 usually dependent on condition

Good Luck

Nearly all Coronas in the UK are tuned ADG. There is also a three-voice
version.

We do see ADG in the States I have owned one
There are also F/Bb/Eb accordions found around Texas.. the second
most common key system used by the COunjunto players

There is the Corona III with the 3 reeds which would correspond to
the 2 row 3 reed called Corso.. I would not recommend either as the
first box

There is also the Corona III R with an LMM reed set with the switches
to give the various voices these are common In Nova Scotia
and Quebec...
