hi everyone,

about 8 years ago, i bought a record called fiesta vallenata featuring
button accordion music from columbia. this record changed my life and had
a big impact on my playing style at the time (this is some of the wildest
three row diatonic playing i've ever heard). recently i got the record
out again and am now wondering where i can find more music like this,
preferably on cd. the orignal record was released on shanachie in the us,
although i think it was orignally on a british label.

thanks and take care,
mark frank

About Vallenato, try Alfredo Gutierrez who add an electric bass and extra
percussion to traditional conjunto---Three row button diatonic, high
pitched single-headed drum and guacharaca scraper. I recommend " El
Palito".
Or Binomio de oro, Lisandro meza( according to'World Music' by rough guide
they recommend " Lisandro's Cumbia"( World Circuit UK) and "Amor
Lindo"(Tumi UK)).And Globe style UK issues Jorge Cabrera( Cuban mix
Vallenato ) and Diomendes Diaz & Nicolas Mendoza.

Mark, there's quite a bit of south American three row available nd you're
right it's very lively . try Downhome records ( Arhoolie ) in El
Cerrito... ca. I have a few discs mostly conjunto but a few South
American things as well... there you will find cd's of cumbias from
Columbia and survey discs featuring three row ...I don't know the
telephone # but the area code is 510....don't forget Valorio Longoria in
texas is credited with introducing cumbia to the texas scene ...good luck

Unfortunately, I have not yet seen any Colombian vallenato or cumbia issued
on a U.S.
label. Your best source in the U.S., if you don't live near an ethnic
neighborhood, is
John Storm Roberts' Original Music, 418 Lasher Road, Tivoli, NY 12583
Tel (914) 756-2767, Fax (914) 756-2027 He has a excellent stock of
vallenato on
Colombian labels and a wonderful assortment of world music recordings,
books & videos.

Check out Antonio Rivas y sus Vallenatos. I am sure he has at least
one CD out: it said so on the concert flyer. I went to his concert
in Amsterdam, and he was brilliant. But I can't give you any details
on the CD for the usual reason: that concert flyer is with almost all my stuff,
still in a box at my parents' house in the Netherlands.

If you live in New York City, you'll find lots of stores in Jackson
Heights that carry Colombian accordion music known as "musica vallenata".
Below I'll list some suggestions, otherwise try World Music at:

Worl...@aol.com

They have a great CD called "Fiesta Colombiana" by Alfredo Gutierrez, who
was crowned "Rey Vallenato" three times. I have met him in person in
Colombia, and have some footage of his playing style, which is mostly
wacky, crazy, and rebellious.

Here are the suggestions:

Artist/Group Album Label
============= ====== =====

Various Vallenatos de Platino Sony Music
Various Vallenatos de Platino 2 Sony Music
Various Leyenda Vallenata Codiscos
Various Leyenda Vallenata 2 Codiscos

Also, if you're in New York City on a Sunday night, you can tune to our
radio show at Columbia University's WKCR FM. (89.9FM). We play lots of
vallenato recordings, including some recordings of the most recent
vallenato festival.

You could also try the Descarga catalog for some colombian accordion
music. Their e-mail is : desc...@aol.com

I believe they carry Vedisco's "Cumbias Con Acordeon" and "Lo Mejor Del
Vallenato". These CD's have a range of folksy to modern colombian
accordion music.

I live in NYC. Once I was wandering in Jackson Height, I saw a
advertizement " Lisandro Meza's concert" in front of bar. We can't get
this type of information through Voice or New York Press. The only way is
buying Spanish newspaper like " Noticia del Mundo"or" El Diario" or wander
in Jackson Height. I'll appreciate someone who close to Latin community
inform through this newsgroup. REIKO
