about 8 years ago, i bought a record called fiesta vallenata featuring
button accordion music from columbia. this record changed my life and had
a big impact on my playing style at the time (this is some of the wildest
three row diatonic playing i've ever heard). recently i got the record
out again and am now wondering where i can find more music like this,
preferably on cd. the orignal record was released on shanachie in the us,
although i think it was orignally on a british label.
thanks and take care,
mark frank

Check out Antonio Rivas y sus Vallenatos. I am sure he has at least
one CD out: it said so on the concert flyer. I went to his concert
in Amsterdam, and he was brilliant. But I can't give you any details
on the CD for the usual reason: that concert flyer is with almost all my stuff,
still in a box at my parents' house in the Netherlands.

If you live in New York City, you'll find lots of stores in Jackson
Heights that carry Colombian accordion music known as "musica vallenata".
Below I'll list some suggestions, otherwise try World Music at:
They have a great CD called "Fiesta Colombiana" by Alfredo Gutierrez, who
was crowned "Rey Vallenato" three times. I have met him in person in
Colombia, and have some footage of his playing style, which is mostly
wacky, crazy, and rebellious.
Here are the suggestions:

Various Vallenatos de Platino Sony Music
Various Vallenatos de Platino 2 Sony Music
Various Leyenda Vallenata Codiscos
Various Leyenda Vallenata 2 Codiscos
Also, if you're in New York City on a Sunday night, you can tune to our
radio show at Columbia University's WKCR FM. (89.9FM). We play lots of
vallenato recordings, including some recordings of the most recent
vallenato festival.

You could also try the Descarga catalog for some colombian accordion
music. Their e-mail is : desc...@aol.com
I believe they carry Vedisco's "Cumbias Con Acordeon" and "Lo Mejor Del
Vallenato". These CD's have a range of folksy to modern colombian
accordion music.
