Does anyone have any info or experience with reeds from "Voci
Ottone" in Italy? I've recently bought a new one-row that has Ottone
"brass plate" reeds. They have the most complex overtones - they're
wonderful reeds. Thanks Bruce

Hi Bruce,

Voci Ottone, means "Brass reeds" translated to English. Actually saying
the frame is made of brass and the tongues of steel.

In Italy only two factory's of reeds are in existence, some people do
"home work" revetting but manufactures are actually only two.
This does not mean that only two types or reeds are available.
Brand names with different "mensures" and different quality's of reeds
are more.

Johann,

They may not be mass-producers, but please don't forget Binci, who I
would consider the best reed makers today:

Binci is also one of the hand riveted brand names.
And i agree that he is very repayable if reeds are ordered form him.
Hi uses a bit a different width on the tongues as "professional
Antonelli" reeds are.
But he gets the tongues and frames produced for him.

I did say that there are others who do riveting, what is called Hand
made reeds today.

If it is about addresses from where one can order reeds we would need to
add the Czech production, witch is now considered as the top of the line
by many accordion producers, if professional quality with hand riveting
is ordered. Just the day before yesterday i had a talk with Mr.
Dittelbach from Harmonikas in Luny Czech again.
production is expanding, and more reeds as are soled to all kind of
accordion produces all over the world, as ever.
Even some Swiss Örgely producers change over to the Czech reeds.
As i was tolled by one Swiss Örgely maker personally.

This does not mean that all Austrian German and Swiss Accordion Makers
use exclusively Czech reeds. Some still use nearly exclusively
Antonelli, Cagnony. But most of them do fit all kind of reeds like reeds
from people who do supply hand riveted reeds like Binci, if the Customer
specifies this.

best regards, Johann

I was recently in Montreal and met the Canadian Beltuna distributor.
They've been working with the factory in Hitaly to develop a version
of the Beltuna "one-row" for French-Canadian music. There are a number
of little tricks like pivoted flappers, better seals on the flappers
and bellows, super-light button action and quick leverage/response, and
nailed reed plates. They had this one box that they'd ordered "have a
demo box with the brass reed plates. No, no, nobody will ever pay that
much extra! Oh, go ahead .. how will you know if you don't have a demo
to show them". I played that box early during the Montmagny "Carrefour
Mondial" festival and begged them to sell it to me on the spot. They
asked that I allow them to keep it until the end of the festival and
then they'd deliver it to me. So we exchanged money and goods late on
Sunday.
I sounds wonderful and the way it plays is so totally sweet. It's
very fast but it's incredibly accurate and the sound is a lot like the
hand-made Quebec boxes. So, that's the new box!

Please explain "pivoted flappers"

Thanks

OK, think of the "exposed" mechanism on the typical one-row box.
You have the button, then the lever, which hinges on the rod or axle,
and there's a wire-like beam that hooks to the back of the flapper
block itself. OK? On these boxes, the junction between the beam and
the back of the flapper block is a small hinge. So, every time the
flapper closes, the actual block (with the sealing surface on the
working face) lies flat on the soundboard and seals perfectly. I'm not
sure exactly how much this adds -- and my guess is that the attention
to all the other details is more important -- but this little box is a
tight as any I've ever played. It just doesn't leak air and there's no
"sloppiness" in the playing action. It's a wonderful instrument.

The french accordion maker Cavagnolo use this feature on all their
accordions. It is a very good idea and shows the seriousness of the
maker. Your box must rock Bruce!

Oh yes, it really rocks! As I've mentioned before, I think it's the
sum of all little details being thought about and attended to. A lot
of work and thought went into these little boxes.
As to the pivoted flappers, my guess is that some parts supplier
has tooled them up and is providing them to accordeon manufacturers (or
should that be "assemblers"). I hope that they'll appear on other
makes because they really work well.
