This is weird. I just heard a rumor, from a source I have reason to
believe, that the Hohner company just recently bought out the Regal factory
in Germany, which has been producing some lovely (for factory instruments)
1 row Cajun style 4 reed boxes, AAMOF that's all they made. Now, what's
weird about this, if it is true, is that Hohner's own "Cajun" box, priced a
little higher than the Regal (which henceforth will possibly be called
something else), is not as nice an instrument: smaller soundbox, a bit less
bellows room, stiffer action, even cosmetically it isn't as nice. How much
do you guys want to bet Hohner will remedy this incongruity very soon, by
the expedient of raising the price on the "Regal"?

Just a little speculation.

Dear Wendy and all

I do business with the factory that makes the Regal Cajun boxes, also
sold under various other names. We distribute them with the name
Galotta. This outfit was taken over from the Treuhand by a certian
Matth. Hohner, once based in Trossingen. This was not the same as M.
Hohner GmbH, which is now run by a very different crew.
Herr Hohner no longer is involved, his erstwhile partner having taken
over.
I last had contact with them last month, and I have no reason to believe
that the Hohner company has taken over since then. Hopefully your source
is wrong.
By the way they still make the full range of piano accordions,
melodeons, Chromatics & concertinas as well as the cajuns.

Out of curiousity, how do the Regal boxes sound? Dry? Semi-dry?

Thanks, Peter!

This was fun to find out. I have a a Galotta "Sport 150" 60 Bass PA that
I found at a street antique sale a long time ago. I've been wondering what
its lineage was. It isn't in the best shape, needs tuning. On the push the
notes go very flat but I like its overall sound...wet. Construction seems
good.

Your note is encouraging! I've been trying to build up the nerve "fix it
up" myself. But maybe I'll have it restored...

I played one several days ago... and the shop I was in was noisy.... but when
trusting my memory of the experience, my best guess is that it was a dry tuned
instrument.
