load it, let us have a listen, then, take it back down if you are
looking for comment from us masses. Being the fine experts we

If he really thinks he's got a killer tune *AND* he wants to make money
from it, I wouldn't go that route if I were him. Even if he leaves the
song up for a day and doesn't allow downloads, there's a chance some
enterprising and amoral soul will rip it and later claim it as his own.

was ten years ago - far from it, as there are less opportunities and
generally less cash floating around (which means less investment in bands).
Traditionally, you'd ask yourself what groups could cover it and then
contact their publishers or managers. But I think you might want to find
an up-and-coming band, and try and bend their arms. You'll need one that
gigs a lot, has an enigmatic frontman and seems destined to great
things. If you hold onto the publishing, you could bet on successive
horses if the chosen one falls at the first hurdle. In other words, you
have to become the publisher that you are looking for.
However, you might as well know that I consider a good song as a
lifelong blessing/curse. You'll be pitching, promoting and (hopefully)
tracking usage for the rest of your life. Make sure you really like it
before you start!

One song is not going to be enough. Write some more, and you'll have a
better chance of getting the attention of more people. Get your songs
on Bandcamp, ReverbNation or even (hopeless but it gets attention)
Myspace. Bandcamp is probably the best, as you've got so much
flexibility with regard to selling your music. Make lots of friends
and be nice to people :)

Really? Do you listen to current pop/rock radio at all? I do for a
number of reasons: My kid puts that station on when she uses my car, so
I get blasted with it when I start up in the morning. I hear that stuff
coming out of her room. I run a little rock band as an extra-curricular
activity at the school where I teach (not music), and I listen to the
stuff the kids want to play. Current pop/rock music is everwhere.
And what do I hear? Guitar, guitar, guitar.
Can I find a bass player or a drummer for the school rock band? It's
always difficult. Keyboard players are around 'cause of all the kids
with piano lessons. And the creative, learn-on-their-own and
write-their-own-songs kids? Guitar, guitar, guitar.

Sorry to hear that. I'm a bit more fortunate than you, I think. If we
only count people I know personally and have current telephone
numbers for (i.e. people who, at a pinch, might be prepared to do a
gig for me at short notice), I know four drummers (excluding those
for whom it is not their primary instrument). They are all under the

There's a way on SoundClick to limit the length of a song to 'demo'?
I've always just uploaded snippets of the songs when I needed this
feature. Am I over looking something?

Problem then is when someone wants to maybe buy the song they end up with
the shortened version. On soundclick, you can turn ON EXCLUSIVITY in the mp3
store to limit all songs to 2 mins but they will still sell as full length

If you feel strongly about this, you could always copy write it, put
together a *real* video, load it up everywhere you can & go
viral...give yourself the best chance for exposure & possible
interest. Odds aren't in your (or anyone's) favor going the
traditional record contract route anymore.

There's such a HUGE musical gulf between the "age of guitar heroes"
and the current Top 40. I wouldn't use either as a reliable indication
of anything.

A real video isn't that hard, either. Dunno what it'd
cost, but if you can "design" it (what, storyboarding?)
you can usually find some guy locally that'll being out
three or four HD cameras and mash it all up for ya.
And there's software to DIY, too.... been goofing around with
this meself, on little digital camera vids...

That's a new one to me... hearing Soundclick described as "better"
than anything ;)
Don't take this the wrong way, but with just one song, are you really
in the position to start insisting on "demo only" clips? At the
moment, your primary job is to get people listening to what you've
done, so let them hear it! Give them the full whack and you'll make
more musical friends.

Exactly... you'll be able to tell you like it, and you can get
the hifi version for bux, since you know you'll be listening
to it. Used to be that the reason companies didn't care that
much about copying was that every generation brought degradation...
with perfect digital copying, the whole game is changed.
You have to give it away at low res, and offer the higher res
version over iTunes, etc.
