I was having a discussion about "melody" with
dudes over at the Jazz Guitar group. Whether
Zion y Lennox is rap, singing or sing-jaying is
sort of debatable. I hear melody in there, other
than that I don't speak Spanish so Reggaeton
only works on a beat/rhythm/melody level for me
anyway.
I mean, do those "cookie monster" vocals on
Death Metal records contain pitching or notes
at all? :) Should we call that singing or rap?
I'm pretty sure the singers in those bands
would object to being called "rappers".
Even when we converse normally we pitch
the words, not to the 12 note scale, but if
someone started speaking in complete monotone
that would sound really odd.
If singing "is music" and rap "isn't music" (a weird
but commonly held view), does that mean classical Indian
singing with quartertone notes is "more musical" than
Abba, does a classical Indian singer scoff at
the Beatles and say "this is not music" :)
What's important is room to manoeuvre
Some genres are so prescriptive/restrictive that, fast or slow, *it's the
same g*ddam song* e.g. 12 bar blues
