Bob Berg was a guest artist last year with the California State University
Hayward Jazz Ensembles. He currently uses a custom mouthpiece which is
made of silver. I do not remember the specific name of it, but I had NEVER
heard of it.
Actually, Bob says he sounds pretty much the same on every mouthpiece. He
had said that he had used a rubber link before this mouthpiece. When he
was doing a clinic with the sax player's at the university, he tried a
rubber link that he had recently got for someone. He tried it for us, and
he pretty much sounded the same. Bob himself kinda liked the mouthpiece,
but did not use it that night with the bands.
Bob also is one who leaves his reed on the mouthpiece. He tapes any
opening other than what goes over the mouthpiece and leaves the reed on
the mouthpiece and the mouthpiece on the neck.
Interesting guy, and very modest.

Eric, can you run that by us again?...I read the foregoing about 5 times
and still can't figure out where Bob puts the tape, or where he doesn't.
TIA.

He tapes the little vent holes that are on the cap. Does that make sense?
There is the opening where the cap goes over the mouthpiece, and some then
have little holes, or like on my Berg Larsen cap, there is a big circular
hole in the FRONT of the cap, so when I have the cap on the mouthpiece, if
I look at it from the front, I can SEE the mouthpiece and reed through
this circular hole. Bob says he tapes ANY of these openings shut to make a
nice SEAL on the mouthpiece to, I think, keep the reed from drying
out.....

The mouthpiece to which you refer is a Francois Louis. Bob's Louis mpc is
in atrocious condition; the tip rail looks like someone dragged it behind
his car for a couple miles. The Louis is fairly small inside, yet round,
and with a pretty serious throat constriction. I haven't played Bob's or
anyone else's Louis, but anyone who can play a mpc that beat up is a freak.

He does, but I'm told by Bob Sheppard he sounds best on a Phil Barone. Berg
isn't satisfied by his Barone yet, but I believe they're looking into it
together. I often rave about Barone's work in these news groups so I'll bet
they wind up with something soon.
He

He did. I played it and found nothing exceptional about it. He, of course,
makes it sound like the end of the world is at hand. He's also goofing with
a Berg; he played it for me over the phone, it's giving him problems.

And his reeds look like the La Brea tar pits as a result. I've never seen
reeds that funky in my life.
