Winter or Walt Johnson baritone sax case?

Anyone have any experience with the Winter shaped baritone sax cases (model
#2197)? I know their alto and tenor shaped cases (including the Green LinE)
are quality cases having used one for alto for many years. I'm looking for
a lightweight case for my new Yamaha 62 bari.

I'm asking since the Walt Johnson is almost twice as expensive as the Winter
in the Woodwind & Brasswind catalog. Any pockets or niches for mouthpieces,
neck, and reeds?

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Ben

Ben - The Walt Johnson bari case is nice. Although it's heavy as shit (or
even heavier), I guess that's a good thing. I haven't tried checking my
horn under the plane in it, but it sure is nice being able to sit your horn
down in some corner and not have to worry about an accident. I still use my
leather bag when I have to schelp, though. Don't know about the Winter at
all, but your horn is worth a lot of money. Why skimp a couple of hundred
bucks for a case you'll have the rest of your life (unless you don't want
the weight).

If you get a Walt Johnson, make sure to send them a stencil of your horn.
Baris are so different in shape, I would get a custom made one from the web
site. Unless, of course, you can go to WWBW and put your horn in it. I had
to have a couple made before they got one that fit my SBA Selmer.

I had a Johnson for my horn and as I discovered, there is really nothing
like a true anvil case...On a flight from San Francisco to Venice, Italy
with a plane change in Amsterdam, I received the instrument from baggage
trashed...they destroyed the Johnson case and did one hell of a job my
bari...(side note: the airline didn't accept responsibility and paid squat
for the repairs...ouch!)... if you going to be flying a lot, get a real
anvil-style case...check out www.flightform.com

Good luck!

Frederick - thanks for that valuable story. Actually I have an anvil case
that my leather gig bag fits into but the damn thing is so heavy I don't
bring it unless I have a roadie to schelp it. These days, however, may
necessitate using it more.

Thanks,

Glenn

Several years ago, I saw Ray Brown at an outdoor concert, and he
commented on the bass case visible at the back of the stage. It seems
that his bass (in what he thought was a good case)came off a plane with
the neck broken OFF. So he had this reinforced fiberglass monster case
built - it looked like it might open and there would be King Tut.

About your Anvil, Glenn - I think they'll put wheels on it for you. Then
you could not only get around easier, but faster too by using it as a
weapon to part the crowds.

When I was looking for a shaped case for my bari I looked at the Walt
Johnson and Protech. In my unscientific testing they both weighted 14 lbs.

I liked the Walt Johnson but it didn't fit my horn (Yani B991) so I went
with the Protech. I didn't find out until later that the Walt Johnson is
not a one size fits all case (thanks woodwind and brasswind). I agree with
Glenn a couple of hundred dollars doesn't make any difference compared to
the price of the ax. I still would like a Walt Johnson for the piece of
mind but everywhere I gig I get in my car and drive so the Protech does
fine. However after about a year and a half it is starting to show wear on
the outside and the padding is starting to breakdown on the inside. I've
got some towels in there for some extra padding. My $0.02.
