After somebody stepped on my ligature :-(, I think I have to go for a new
one. At the moment, I'm using a shoelace...it works quite well but the reed
moves while I am playing...So...any recommendations for a good ligature? And
how can a different ligature effect the sound? My current setup is (if that
has any relevance):
Selmer SA 80 II alto
Selmer C* mpc
Fibracell reed
Shoelace...
TIA for your answers

Shoelace, what a great idea. Actually I did try string while I was
experimenting. What I settled on was .29 plastic tie that locks in and
holds the reed quite well. Really opens up the tone on my 6. The less
on the reed, the better. The tie beats the rovner I was using. Can't
beat the price(G)

Rovner, Rovner, Rovner.
I bought one a few weeks ago, mostly because someone told me to, and I can't
BELIEVE the difference it has made. I was so stoked that I ran out and got
another for my clarinet. Best 20 bucks I ever spent. It takes a few uses to
get the thing broken in (and a bit longer to get used to putting it on the
mouthpiece), but you'll love it.

I like the Rovner as well, but it damaged the surface of my mouthpiece.

To those who are unfamiliar with the Olegature (of which I was one of until
Saturday), it looks very similar to a Rovner...but made of a metal
chain-mail instead of whatever leather/composite Roveners are of...and there
are two tightening screws on the top instead of one. This is key; a lot of
flexibility is created by having these two screws as for fine-tuning your
sound. You can really make substantial differences in your sound,
projection and quality by adjusting the tightness on the front and rear of
the reed...I got everything from a Desmond-y airy, light, soft sound to a
harsh Contraine-ish bark...even an almost classical "legit" timbre...all on
the same reed and mouthpiece.
I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend taking a serious look at this ligature...
The only major drawback is cost...I bought it straight from Oleg for $70. A
friend has seen the same ligs in retail stores for over $100. I would
suggest ordering direct through the web at http://www.saxpro.com It is not
cheap by any means...certianly a lot more expensive than even a Bay...but
for all that it did for me at least, it was well worth my money.
I don't work for them...I don't know them...but I really, really like this
ligature!

PS: Dosen't Candy Dulfer use these Ripomonte O-Ring ligatures??? I can't
tell on the pics in her For The Love of You CD whether or not she's using
O-Rings or maybe a hair elastic? If they're the rings, she sure does use a
bunch of them...
