I'm unfamiliar with this horn. Can anyone give me any info or reference
points? I was not aware there were plastic horns.

The Grafton alto (only altos were made) was made in England in the
mid-1950s. They were available in the USA thru the Gretsch drum company,
who used to list them in their catalog. The plastic body (called
"acrylic" at the time) is an eggshell color with clear plastic
keyguards. Keywork and neck are yellow brass.

There's not much weight differential between the Grafton and a brass
alto because the plastic had to be thicker-walled for sturdiness. Paul
Cohen says they're pretty good playing horns (he showed me his a few
years ago).

The problem with these horns was apparently that the plastic bodies
would wear out where they met the rods and screws. Gretsch offered to
replace the body (i.e., put your old keys on a new horn) for such and
such amount.

Ornette Coleman played Graftons for several years and wore out a bunch
of them. Charlie Parker's sold for some horrendous amount a while back
($35,000???). I believe it want to a jazz heritage foundation in Kansas
City, his home town.

What does Jonathan mean by "only for a collector"? Not for a player?

If you want to hear Parker playing a Grafton, get a copy of "The
Quintet, Jazz at Massey Hall"..recorded in 1952 in Canada the night of
the Walcott/Jersey fight..Parker, Gillespie, Roach, Powell and Mingus
(not a rookie among that crowd)..In my unbiased opinion the best Perdido
ever recorded...

Yes..1952..the night of the Walcott/Marciano fight. Bebop wasn't well
known then nor were the players..they played to less than a full house
that night because, so the story goes, everyone stayed home to listen to
