I'm looking for opinions here. I'm about to buy a baby grand and I am
deciding between a 1 year old Samick and Young Chang. They're both 6'1",
the Samick is $7,000 and the Young Chang is $9,000. Any insights are
appreciated.

Thanks

My suggestion is that don't even think of a Samick!!
They are used as furniture pianos. The action and tone loses to most
upright pianos. Oh yeah, if you are willing to shop around and bargain
you can get a Young Chang 6'1 for around 8,000 w/ tax.
I have a cousin who just recently purchased a Weber 6'1 for very, very
very cheap. Did you know that the Weber piano is owned by the Young
Chang company. The 6'1 versions of both are virtually identical. But
of course, the Weber has German labor whereas YC is Korean labor.
Where do you live? If somewhere in California, then e-mail me.
because I know a great piano place where Brand New from the factory and
fresh-out-of-the-box pianos are sold. Of course the prcies for these are
rock-bottom and cannot be beaten.

I wouldn't buy either one. I spent a great deal of time researching
grand pianos a year and a half ago, played quite a few before buying
one, and talked to a number of technicians. Neither Samick nor
Young Chang were recommended (won't stay in tune, won't hold up, etc
etc). I played one of each (both used) and I wasn't particularly
impressed with either, although they both ...looked... very nice.

I ended up with a Kawai KG3C that was about 20 years old but had
hardly been played, a very nice 5'8" instrument, that needed some
regulation and voicing but has been otherwise terrific. And it also
looks like a new piano, it hasn't a scratch on it. It cost me
considerably less than either the 7K or 9K pianos you mention and
I'm extremely satisfied with it.

Albert:

The facts are that Weber is owned by Samsung. (It WAS originally purchased
by Young Chang, but then sold to Samsung about a year later)

The Young Chang and Weber 6'1" grand are identical in scale design. Only
difference is slight cosmetic cabinet difference.

The Weber is NOT produced with "German labor", but in South Korea in the
same factories as Young Chang.

They are both moderate pianos and should not be expected to be "artist
quality". I have sold both for a number of years.

Random blatherings:

o Play 'em both, and buy the one that feels the best, and has the quality
of sound you like.

o I think YC's have awful sound, very muddy, and in my opinion, a very
springy touch. (this is compared to Yamaha, which was sitting right
next to it).

o I know nothing about Samick, buy I guess in my opinion, that counts for
something, how good could they be? :)

o Of course, your motivations play the biggest part, if you're only going
to tap away at it an hour a week, then hell, I'd buy the one that
looked the coolest. However, if you're going to be practicing
3 hours a day, get the one that feels the best.

o Find another samick owner and see if it's a reputable brand.
