I've recently ran into a new Ibach upright (KI-114, I think) at a local
dealer. Its reasonably priced for a German piano..
Ibach used to have a reputation for being top notch instruments. Are
they as good as they used to be?

Ibach was purchased my Daewoo a few years back. I am not sure if they are
distributed in the US any longer. Ibach pianos have an outstanding reputation.

He is right Almo. Historically, Ibach was a wonderful piano. But Daewoo isn't.
Just my 2 cents.

For appearances sake, the story is told that Ibach still has oversight, but
I wonder???
Anyone have any insider info?

I can only confirm that the Koreans were making them. I have no
reference which tells me that has changed. The theory was that the
Koreans were going to make "exact copies" of the German piano. I am
certain the available base of good craftsman is far better in Germany
than Korea, and I have seen how Koreans attempt to imitate. I believe
they are capable of copying everything but the craftsmanship, which to
me makes it a different piano, not an exact copy- IOW, not as good.
If there was indeed a dissatisfaction with the deal on the part of the
Germans, I would suspect the craftsmanship issue was why- but this is
pure speculation.

OK, This is what I was shown in a German Book called 'Atlas der
Piano-Nummern' by H.K. Herzog and Jan Grossbach. Ibach have some sort
of cooperation with both Sauter and Daewoo. They carry pianos under
the name of Roth & Junius (produced In Korea), and Schiedmayer
(produced in Japan). Ibach Production continues in Schwelm, Germany.
This matched the Ibach site (http://www.ibach.de), which shows all
three brands, but states that the Roth & Junius pianos are inferior to
the Ibach line.
The book was published in 1995. Does anybody if the situation changed?
I was under the impression that Schiedmeyer was made my Kawai.
Do I need enlightening?( On this subject only....)

Schiedmayer was a German piano maker that was acquired by Ibach in the
early 80's. I've confirmed that much. German Schiedmayers are no
longer manufactured, Although according the Ibach site, Ibach still
claim to own the brand name 'schiedmayer', and offer pianos under that
name ( 2 uprights and a grand).
By telling me that Schiedmayer was made by Kawai, you're basically
confirming the information I got that Schiedmayer pianos are made in
Japan, though I don't know what the relationship between Ibach and
Kawai is.
Hope this helps,
Almo
P.S. You spelled the name 'Schiedmeyer' If thats NOT a typo, then I
think its safe to ignore all I said, since it might be a completely
different piano.
P.P.S.
Do you like your Schiedmayer? Whats it like?
Just curious.
Almo-
I'm a tuner. I tuned a new Schiedmayer last week at the store where I'm an
independent contractor. An upright very similar in looks to the Kawai CX-21
but not of the same quality.
It is a very useful instrument but some of the unnecessary stuff was left out
like decorations on the plate... and differences in the string scale that must
have been the less expensive way to go.
