Does anyone have online a table of contents for "the Real Book"
volumes I, II, and III (the ones produced, I think, by Berklee
College) that they could email me?
Thanks very much.

You can buy NRB1-3 from Sher, or from Jamey Aebersold. For the "old"
Real Book you'll have to hit the streets or lurk around university music
departments.

Not an endorsement, but there are multiple volumes of the "old",
illegal,
Berklee-origined Real Books.
Clay
Whenever the topic of the "real" book comes up, there's always
confusion over old-illegal and the new legal one from Sher.
I've seen it claimed that the "New Real Book" is overtaking
the old book in popularity, but have not experienced this to
any degree with the jazz musicians I know. Very few own the
new book.
The old book has 3 volumes as well. Also, it is definately easier
to obtain than "lurking around universities". Just ask at your
neighborhood music store, and they probably have it in the back
or under the counter. Do not misconscrue this as an endorsement of
illegal activity.

Hey Jeff, I don't know of any online index, but I remember you from
Boston. Are you still playing? And are you sure you don't want to hear
any more about how illegal or inaccurate the ORB is?

Yes, both the old "illegal" error-full hand-written real books and the
new ones have 3 volumes (actually, volumn III of the "illegal" one uses
computer generated lead sheets). I'm interested in obtaining an online
index for the old "lousy" but widely used set of books. Any help
would be much appreciated.

Volume 3 of the "old" illegal real book is pretty hip and has no
overlap with the previous two volumes. Please, don't construe this as
an endorsement or they will come to my house and rip it apart looking
for it (the copywrite police).

I am not about to approve in public of "illegal" fake books. But I am
really astonished that you can find web sites that tell you how to turn
model rockets into explosive delivery systems, websites that explain how
to make your own plastic explosive, websites the tell you how to pick
locks, and make the tools to do so (illegal in most states unless you
are a licensed locksmith). There are websites featuring child
pornography, websites selling books on how to assume a new identity in
order to escape tax obligations or debts, websites explaining how to
grow marijuana, process cocaine, etc. There are other sites that feature
pirated software, visa and mastercard hacking, phone phreaking, network
hacking, and online sabatage (however you spell it).
All these sites are publicly accessible, can be located on Yahoo or Web
Crawler, and feature incredibly damaging and illegal activities. Those
sites thrive. Yet here is a xeroxed songbook. The illegal Real Book got
me going in jazz and is responsible for my going out and buying all 3
volumes of the "new" Real Book; two or three of Hal Leonard's
"ILLEGIBLE" Fakebooks, and Leonard's books even trade on the word
"real"--the "REAL LITTLE" Ultimate Jazz Fakebook, etc. I am astonished
that a xeroxed songbook that has actually had the effect of increasing
awareness of jazz and therefore sales of "legit" books is practically
censored on the net. I am not questioning the law, nor even the
morality. I am just puzzled. The Internet is a virtual swarm of anarchy
and rebellion, but alas, our little "Real Book" is so dangerous, so
subversive, so great a threat to the economy of the nation, that the
mere posting of a few scanned pages as http://WEBSITEDELETED provokes a
storm of e-mail to the page owner, including threats. In the mean time,
if you want to find out some good serial numbers for unlocking that copy
of Finale 3.7 you downloaded from a WaReZ newsgroup.....
Peace. Merry Christmas.
http://www.musicmart.com/fake.html
They have many fake books and you can trigger a drop down/pop up menu
that lists the songs.
Unfortunately they do not have complete lists for any except the NRBs.
And the page design is very poor, particularly the use of the option
lists. Also there were some spelling mistakes of a type which suggested
the lists were scanned and OCRed from the books.
I downloaded the html source and reformatted the song list for each
volume of the New Real Book. Here it is for those who are interested (I
hope it is complete, but I don't have the books yet to check).
Tony.

We live in a society of double standards. I'm not saying "tough, get
used to it," but is it possible that the above illegal nonRealBook
activities are mostly the province of creeps, skeevs, jerks and
slimeballs (who could care less about morality or society, probably
won't listen to condemnation of their behavior, and may retaliate in all
sorts of nasty ways if threatened), whereas Real Book trafficking is
engaged in by talented and artistic people (who, some argue, ought to
know better and can probably be stomped on with impunity, especially by
those who may resent musicians for "not working for a living")?
Just a (convoluted) thought...

CELEBRATING THE SAXOPHONE: An Illustrated History
At your local bookseller from William Morrow & Co.
Since you have them all, could you tell me how the UJFB compares with
the three NRBs? How accurate are they? For the songs which appear in
both, are the melody and changes exactly the same? Any other things to
watch out for? Is there a full table of contents of the UJFB online
anywhere?
I'm trying to decide which to go for first, for piano use (as well as
trying to find the "old" RB).
Thanks,
Tony.
> [but] that a xeroxed songbook that has actually had the effect of increasing

I have been trying to track down a source for the "old" Real Book volume 1
(C concert) in southern England, with great difficulty. None of the
local music shops knows anything about it, although some have the NRBs.
Everyone else in the jam sessions I have started attending uses it, so
even though I will definitely buy the NRBs sometime, I also want the one
that matches what the others are using.
Someone gave me the details of one source, but they have run out of the
concert edition Real Book 1. The get them shipped from Chicago and don't
expect more until April! :-( They also said there is a book 4 out now,
too. Does anyone have a list of songs in each book they could mail me or
post to the group?
And can anyone mail me with details of another RB source in the UK?
> Since you have them all, could you tell me how the UJFB compares with
> the three NRBs?
A lot of different stuff. UJFB has more standards. NRBs have more modern
jazz tunes.
> How accurate are they? For the songs which appear in
> both, are the melody and changes exactly the same?
Pretty close. NRB offers (occasional) alternative subs as found on
differen versions or useful at different tempos, and explains a lot about
various treatments like intros and sequences of choruses and bridges
(which I can take or leave; it's only useful if you want to sound like a
particular recording, and if you've heard the recording, you don't need
anyone to tell you how many times to vamp, or whatever....) ...whereas
UJFB just gives the basics, the most useful version of the changes.
The biggest difference, of course , is typography. You pay 3 times as much
for the 3-volume NRB to get the nice big page spread and large-type chord
symbols.

This may seem odd, but I find the NRB typography and page layout hard to
follow. The page just doens't seem easily navigable to my trifocaled
eyes. The xeroxed "old" Real Book seems somehow cleaner. In fact.
someone has created a font for notation programs that emulates the old
Real Book's look, so I must not be alone in this.
Anybody else find the NRB hard to use when the pressure is on?
So borrow one and xerox it. That's what the store owners do. You'll
save a little money and get the same result.
I agree with what is said below. The copywrite thing is taken way too
seriously IMHO, even when we are talking about relatively trivial
amounts of money being "lost" (although indirectly there is money
gained elsewhere, legitimately as outlined in the example below).

I just checked out the New Real Book at
http://www.musicmart.com/fake.html. Since
I already have all 3 volumes of the old real
book, I figured I'd pick a few of my favorite
tunes to see if they're in the new books.
So, I looked up Au Privave(Charlie Parker)
and Joy Spring (Clifford Brown). Both tunes
are in NONE of the 3 volumes of the new real
book.
How, in heavens name, can a real/fake book not
contain Joy Spring??????
>How, in heavens name, can a real/fake book not

maybe they want to present some new tunes for a change that aren't in
the fake books everyone has already. The overlap in these is really a
bummer sometimes.
