Hello--after a couple years, my piano has formed a layer of dust that is
apparently adhered to the surface of the piano...well, not adhered
literally, but I can't get it off with the feather duster. I think its
from cooking oil which is rather strange because its at a different
floor of my house but... Although I can wipe it off by breathing on it
(don't know how else to describe it :-) ) and rubbing it gently many,
many times with a soft linen cloth, I'm wondering if their is an easier
way to get rid of this dust? What can I do to clean this instrument?
I'm assuming any sort of solvent will absolutely destroy the finish,
which is high polished ebony.

If you reply, please e-mail me a response in addition to just replying
by post.
Thankyou!

Hi polish ebony is impervious to almost anything. I personally use windex
for the problem you describe.

Depends on what the finish is. Is it lacquer or polyester? Also what brand
of piano, and how old?
If it's polyester, you can use "almost" anything to clean it without hurting
the finish. Lacquer is more fragile. Give us more info if you can.
