Yes, I can understand your enthusiasm for Edith Vogel's playing. She
certainly gave me plenty of enjoyment with her recitals for the BBC in
England during the 1960s and 70s, her Schubert and Beethoven being
particularly memorable. At about that time she was rated as one of the best
three pianists in the world by informed critics such as Misha Donat. Edith
Vogel was a refugee from the Holocaust who made her career in this country
but without ever becoming in any way a glamour name. She played with great
authority and persuasiveness. Unfortunately she is no longer with us but
there must be many such as myself who remember her performances with great
affection.
If your Hammerklavier CD is that issued with BBC Music Magazine in 1994 then
I guess you'll already know that it was recorded in 1977. I can't say what
piano was used but I'd be very surprised if it were anything other that
Steinway.
Thanks very much, Paul for your information.
Does the late Ms. Vogel have any other recordings on CD available in the
states?
Thanks

I don't know, but I would very much doubt it. Even here in the United Kingdom
she has - so far as I am aware - no extant recordings. We really are
dependent on the BBC producing CDs of what must be a considerable archive of
piano recordings by this remarkable, but all too little known, artiste.
