Simple question: is there a standard height for a piano keyboard (distance
between top of keys and floor)? If so, what is it?

Another simple question: is there a standard height for a piano bench?
Again, if so, how tall are they?

I'm planning on building a piano bench tonight for my new digital and would
like some idea as to how high it should be. It's been a while since I've
played and every height seems about right to me. I realize I could simply
measure a couple of pianos but this way involves less driving.

Thanks,

Dan.

I have found that measuring in the vicinity of 9" to 11" from the top of
the keys to the top of the piano bench is the general distance.

As long as you're building it yourself, add some plush cushioning to the
top of the bench. Your, um...posterior will thank you about 20 minutes
into the practice session!

Oddly enough, I just measured my grand piano and bench a few days ago so
I could have those height figures while shopping for a digital piano.

The distance from the floor to the top of the bench was 28 inches.
The distance from the top of the bench to the surface of the keys was
10 inches (which would of course mean 38 inches between keys and floor).

That 28-inch high bench is only two inches lower than my dining room table.
How do you reach the pedals? I suspect that you mean that the height of the
keyboard was 28 inches and that the height of the bench was 18 inches. I just
measured, and the key tops on my Roland are about 28-1/2 inches from the floor.
I had set the seating height based purely on comfort (I'm using an adjustable
office chair), and now find that figure to be exactly 10 inches lower than the
keyboard.

FWIIW I had a Yamaha keyboard at 28 1/2 inches when the adjustable stand
was set a lowest position. I called a friend with a Kawai grand to have
him measure his and it was 28 1/2 inches also. I assumed that the
standard, if there is one, is about 28 1/2 inches.
