Hello,

I am currently comparing a 6'1" Young Chang PG-185 (the Joseph
Pramberger design) to a 5'3" Yamaha GH1B. They are roughly the same
price.

At this moment, I'm leaning toward the PG-185. Can anyone tell me why
I SHOULDN'T buy the YC and buy the Yamaha instead? I'm especially
interested in anyone who has purchased a PG-185 (or PG-175) and has
lived to regret the purchase. Any and all comments are greatly
appreciated!

Thank you,

Jess Reyes

Either piano might be suitable for you when it really comes
down to it. Personally though, I've been impressed enough
with the improvements in the Young Chang(since Pramberger
became a technical consultant)that I'd lean toward the YC.
However, if you're talking about the "C" series Yamahas,
that's a different story. In that case,I'd opt for any one
of those over the YC.

I would think that the quality differences are so small that it would come down
to a matter os size. And size wins nearly every time.

I don't think there is much of a choice to be made. A 6' 1" Asian piano is
going to sound and play better (of course it has to be prepped right) than a 5'
3" Asian piano. The differences in quality in the new ones isn't that great.

The 6'1" Young Chang wins over a smaller Yamaha. I have tuned Korean
built pianos that were very nice, and I have seen some that were only
fair. Every piano is a little different. You should hire a registered
piano technician, or someone of equal competence, to tune the Young Chang
before you purchase. Make certain that your tuner has no affiliation with
the dealer. Ask for an objective evaluation of the action and key
bushings. Let the tuner know that you want to know about any false beats,
especially in the treble. Only by tuning the piano will the tuner be
familiar with the tension and response of every tuning pin. This would be
the best money you could spend, and the piano will only need touching up
at your home by the dealer's tuner.

By virtue of size, the YC 185 wins pretty easily. The GH-1 is not Yamies best
and is 10 inches smaller.

In the end, choose what you love - GOOD LUCK!
