I am trying to connect my computer headphones to the headphone socket
in the backside of Yamaha E403. I see that the radius of the socket is
too large as compared to my headphone jack. So, my headphone jack does
not fit in the socket.

When I try to see what is inside the hole (socket), I find that there
are some metal strips. What kind of headphone will fit in this? Or is
there some converter that I need to buy? The E403 manual does not say
anything about this. Please help.

If they are like the ones on my Yamaha P-85, they are standard telephone
plugs, the ones with tip, ring, and sleeve. These have been standard since
the 1930s or so. A real electronics place should have them. Probably not the
dinky ones that hobby shops, such as Radio Shack, would have.

Your keyboard probably has a 1/4" headphone socket, and your headphones are
most likely a 1/8" plug. You can find an adaptor at any electronics store
or online store.

From the picture in the manual, it looks like you have a 1/4" stereo
headphone input. You probably have an 1/8" headphone jack. Adapters are
readily available. Make sure you get a stereo jack though.

Despite the criticism of Radio Shack, they definitely have the 1/8" to
1/4" stereo plug adaptor you need. So will any well-stocked
electronics department at such stores as Wal-Mart. Take your
headphones with you.

I guess all Radio Shack stores are not alike.

I remember the good old days, in the 1950s, when Radio Shack was _one_ very
large, complete, store in Boston with everything you might want. You could
buy all manner of electronic parts and systems, short wave radio receivers
and transmitters. Vacuum tubes, transistors, resistors, capacitors,
transformers of all types, electronic hardware (sockets and plugs, for example).

Since Tandy Leather bought them in 1963, they opened a chain of little
shopping mall and strip mall outlets, they are very much worse. I do not
know if they still have their main store in Boston any more, but I very much
doubt it.

So if you are in luck, your local Radio Shack may well have these adapters
or plugs.
