Attention Fender Rhodes aficionados. I'm compiling a list of all the bands
(all types of music) who used the Fender Rhodes Piano during the 1970's.
If anyone can name songs which feature the Fender Rhodes sound, it would
be extremely appreciated! Any personal stories or anecdotes would be great
too. Thanks in advance for any help.

This is probably of no use to you, but I think the Rhodes is often
confused with the Wurltizer. I think the model is EP200. Super Tramp
used it a lot, for example. I think there may have been another type
of electric piano that had a very mellow sound, with a long sustain,
but I do not know the name of it. It might just be an electric
upright, actually.

Anyhow, I do not have any songs/bands for you - I'm sure there are
_lots_, though.

Greg.

What the heck - here's a few. (not sure whether all of these are
strict "70's" bands, though)

Stevie Wonder (e.g 'Living For the City')
The Doors (e.g 'Riders On The Storm')
Bee Gees (e.g 'Stayin Alive')
Fleetwood Mac (can't think of any specific songs at the moment)
Led Zeppelin (e.g 'Stairway To Heaven' - I think it's a Rhodes, .
anyway)

Gino Vanelli's early recordings had the Rhodes sound all over the
place:
Storm at Sunup (entire album)
Powerful People (entire album)
Gist of the Gemini (entire album)
Crazy Life (entire album)

By the way, any of you out there who use to enjoy Gino Vanelli - - his
"Live in Montreal" Cd is fantastic...

Well, there are dozens and dozens of jazz/fusion aggregates who used the
Rhodes to absolutely no end.

But here's the classic rock band who had the Rhodes sound all over their
music:
Supertramp (remember the "Logical Song"?)

... or was that a Wurlitzer electric?? oh well!

You could add a number of Steely Dan recordings:

The tune, "Everyone's Gone to the Movies" on the album *Katy Lied*
has a tasty Rhodes solo, as well as "Black Cow" from the album
*Aja*.

It's the Wurlitzer - trust me. That song is one of
my favourites!

"Best Friend", by Queen - Wurltizer again, not the Rhodes.

I happen to think the Wurltizer has a superior sound
to the Rhodes in a lot of cases. Where it misses out is
that it's only 5 octaves (to the best of my knowledge),
and has a very short sustain in the top registers.

My favorite: 3-dog night "Joy to the World"? Fleetwood Mac's "Riannon" sure sounds
like one but I'm not sure it really is.

I believe Jan Hammer with Mahavishnu Orchestra played Rhodes some, and
if I'm not mistaken, some of it was distorted and had that almost synthesized
sound - kind of neat, since it is an acoustic/electric instrument.

Herbie Hancock used it extensively. Check out HeadHunters,
Fat Albert Rotunda, Crossings.

Keith Jarrett used it on his album with Jack DeJohnette
(Ruta and Daiti (spell ???)).

Bill Evans played it on one track on his album with Toots Thielsmans
(a harmonica player). I have forgotten the title of the album.
I have it somewhere !!

I would like someone to explain the difference between all the
different Rhodes models, the difference between the 'Fender Rhodes'
and the 'Rhodes' (different company ownership, but was there any
differences in the piano).

Also, the early Rhodes action was vastly different to the later action.
Among other things, it had much larger hammers.

While I have your attention, my Rhodes Mark I will not stay in tune,
despite my attempts to tune it. I am hoping that someone might
suggest how i can get it to stay there. Perhaps I could replace all
of the tuning coils ??

Actually, if anyone is interested, I can email or ftp
a couple of soundfiles of a solo Wurltizer & Rhodes, so
you can hear the difference. The Wurltizer would be
played with samples that I took from a sample CD,
and the Rhodes would be my Roland RD-300S digital
piano. The Wurltizer will lack timre change with velocity,
but otherwise sounds very realistic, especially
since I don't use any looping. (I play the samples
in batch using Csound on a PC). The Roland
doesn't sound _exactly_ like a real Rhodes, but it's
pretty damn close.

I'd use MPEG audio layer 3 encoding, and I have a pointer
to a software (batch) decoder (for PCs & Suns,
I think), which would expand the compressed file
(1Megabyte per minute) by about 10:1. So, assuming
that 30 seconds would be enough, I'd you'd need
about 5.5Mbytes all up of spare disk space.
Plus of course a soundcard! :-)

Alternatively, assuming that most people know
what a Rhodes sounds like, you just need to
find a Wurltizer. The Vintage Keys synth
has a reasonable Wurlitzer or two, assuming
you can't find a real one.

Or just listen to some old Super-Tramp
songs. ;-)
