Whose Digital Pianos have the better sound and action? Kawai's
CA-950/750/550 or Yamaha's CLP-860/880?
Thanks for some advice!

I think the Kawais sound better. Please note
that the stage model, the MP9000, has software
that actually improves its tone. I don't know
if this applies to the other models. Some
people think the Yamaha sounds better, though,
and it is perhaps a cleaner sound. But I had
a hard time telling the Kawai 170 from a piano;
that isn't true for any of the Yamahas I played,
except the GranTouch.

I also like the action of both. Neither
is a piano though. The Kawai has wooden keys.
Although some people say this doesn't matter,
I think it helps keep the weight more uniform
on the keys. The Yamaha action is heavier though
to most people, good or bad. There is reported
key bounce in some of the Kawai models.

I have looked at a lot of digital pianos,
and these two makes represent the best. Yamaha
sells a lot more units, has a longer warranty,
and probably has better dealer support. Kawai
has come out recently with some good products,
but doesn't seem to be pushing them a whole lot.

You'll find some relevant information at the CVP Users Group web site
(the CLP is very similar to the CVP, and there's comparison information
on the Kawai).

Hello,

I have the same question, epacially concerning the Yamaha CLP-860 vs the
Kawai CA-550 (same price). Is the CA-550 tone notably different from the
CA-750? What about the pedals? Which one do you recomment for beginners?

Thorsten -

Wo sind Sie her? Dresden?

It bears mentioning that whenever I see a beginner purchasing anything but a
very basic digital, I feel a little twing inside. Not because the digie will
not suffice for now, it will. But on any advanced level, a digital is not the
best instrument to choose, and it will lose its value quickly. (Like a
computer)

Why not choose an acoustic? Even a nice used one will hold its value better and
perform as well.

Do you have more info on this? Where is the patch? I don't
see any references on the kawai web page.

Write to Kawai. I saw the posts on
Harmony Central. www.harmonycentral.com
Look under synthesizer reviews or something
like that and then Kawai.
Write to the posters;
they are usually pleased to share the
information.

Hello Thorsten,
I just purchased the Kawai CA550 after checking
out the Yamaha you mentioned.
My wife and I are very pleased with the Kawai
sound and feel. We tried the Yamaha you mentioned
but found the sound to Tinish or Brite if that is
the correct word.
Both my 8 yr old sons are talking piano as well as
my wife and I enjoy playing.
We looked at Accoustic Pianos but if you buy used
you have to know what your buying, and even then
some of the used ones don't sound that great.
If you buy new your looking at double the price of
the CA550. Then you have to consider the tuning of
an accoustic at least twice a year.
Ideally an accoustic is the real thing but not in
our price range. Our neibour plays at a church and
she tried the Kawai and found it execellent to
play, she likes it better than her accoustic at
home. I am not knocking the Yamaha sound, it
really depends where your going to play it, seems
to be more for a band or someone familiar with the
sound..
Hope this helps.
Richard.
Hope this was helpful.
