Derek,
Can you post the research result you have on Disklavier? We would
like to hear it too.
Thanks.
What are some of the problems that you are thinking of?
I do have one question ... is this Disklavier the same as the Yamaha
Ensemble Piano? (Maybe it is called a different name here in Japan.)
The Ensemble Piano I saw here is a player piano that uses a diskette
for recording or playback. It is neat!

All the problems i have are concerned with controlling the Disklavier from
an external source via midi-in.
The problems i have with the Disklavier are:
1. I cannot get the 16-note-polyphony working as specified in the manual.
The most i get is 12, sometimes as low as four. Depending on the luck of
the day.
2. The dynamic range of the instrument is smaller than played by a
pianist. And when sending in note-on messages with velocity lower than
about 25, there may not be any sound!
3. I suspect that it does not play in 100% rhythmic accuracy. It sure
sounds like it that way.
4. Its sustain pedal will not hold for more than about one minute, even if
it was being told to (via midi-in).

I have not heard of the ensemble piano, so i don't know. I think they are
trying to produce a more advanced version of the Disklavier which would
solve some of those current problems.
I hope this helps.
PS: BTW, are you (Leslie) actually in Japan? Your address shows MIT.(?)
