Is there any way to convert these things to MIDI (*.MID) files? I don't
want to plug it in to a PC, physical location makes it impossible.

The files (*.fil) are on DOS readable diskettes, but I haven't found anything
that can read the actual files.

Any tips desperately appreciated. :)

TIA.

Giebler Enterprises, 26 Crestview Drive, Phoenixville, Pennsylvania
19460 (USA) sells "diskette manager software" and "sequencer
conversion software." What they call the "DOMSMF" utility will
do what you want. As of January 1994, the price was $54.95.
Their voice phone number is 610 933-0332, fax 610 933-0395.

I am not associated with Geibler. I have purchased this package from
them and have been about 80% satisfied with it. In my experience, it
does work as advertised. However, I conisder its support of remapping
voices and drum notes less than adequate -- which simply means that
so far I've been too lazy to type in all the data necessary to
implement remapping.

My brother owns a disklavier. He also had problems when reading files.
From a collegue he got an Atari computer with the package QBASE.
This program is able of reading and editing disklavier files.
Unfortunately, I do not have details about this package how to get it.

I was at a Yamaha dealer this afternoon, Keyboard Distributors in
Mountain View CA. The owner said that there is no program that will
convert the Clavinova ESEQ files to general midi and vice versa.
But is it your claim that it will in fact convert these files?
My goal is the same as Jaye's. I have a Clavinova CVP87 in one
room and a Windows 3.1 computer in another room. I'd like to be
able to record my music on the clavinova, bring the disk to the
PC, convert to general midi format, change instruments to general midi
instruments rather than the Clavinova specific instruments, clean up any
sour notes and embellish at will.

The dealer had a tone generator/software package that would play ESEQ
files convincingly and allow edits. But it wouldn't convert to/from
SMF. That's another question, for playing back a SMF (or ESEQ) file on
a PC, is a special "tone generator" needed. Or will a sound blaster or
other sound card word with software to create equally effective sound?

Please e-mail ami...@ix.netcom.com in addition to following up here in
the newsgroup. Sometimes too much time goes by in between checking
newsgroups and I want to be sure to see any replies. Thanks. _Mike

That's exactly what the Giebler software will do. I'm not suprised
your dealer was unaware of this software. Mine was too. Apparently,
Yamaha does not believe in publicizing third-party support. (Giebler's
address, etc., included below from original article.) Note that the
Giebler software only handles the conversion. You still need a
sequencer to edit the midi file.

A GM-compliant sound card should be adequate for purposes of monitoring
your work. Equally effective sound? I'm not sure what you mean here.
Obviously, the sound you *hear* at your computer will be limited by
the sophistication of your sound card and quality of your speakers.
Your midi files, however, will play back on another system (or on the
Clavinova, if you convert them to Type 0) with the full resources of
that system.

It's a pity your computer and Clavinova are in different rooms.
It's undocumented, but the CVP-87a is capable of playing General
Midi sent to its midi input port. Although its GM voices are a bit
thinner than the native Clavinova voices, they are *much* more
satisfying than the voices produced by most sound cards!

Many thanks to Robb who converted a few files for me to see. They worked
perfectly, slapped the midi files in an editor, torqued 'em around, and
boom, instant music.

The program Robb mentioned worked great, I shall be ordering one soonest.

Next stop, technics format, my sister has one of 'em but the disks don't
look to be DOS format. Any ideas there?

I am very new to my Calvinova but in the manual I reed that it is
possible to convert Calvinova Soundfiles to General Midi by copying
with some kind of option (I forgot).
