Whoa.. Even Lars uses Gretsch drums in the studio with Metallica.
Who knew?.

I guess sound matters when you record one bar at a time...

I don't know about you, but I've always associated Metallica with 'That
Great Gretsch Sound!' =)

It's interesting that he uses Gretsch kicks & floor toms, but the
smaller toms are Tama. I will say the *best* kick I have ever heard
was a 16x22 Gretsch.

I once saw a picture of a house kit in a "big time" studio--I think it
was one in New York. Anyway, it looked like every tom was a different
brand! There was a Yamaha Maple Custom, Gretsch, and a DW, at least. I
couldn't tell what the kick was.

Whatever works, I guess.

He might as well use cardboard boxes.

Actually, if I recall correctly in one of their videos from the early 90's
(I think it's "Nothing Else Matters" maybe) they show Lars in the studio
with a Gretsch kit and his cymbals aren't all Zildjians either.

I do recall that video myself. He was using a set of 15" Sabian HH Hi Hats as
plain as day. And right about the same time his big zildjian ad campaign came
out in the magazines.. I bet they were hoping nobody caught that on MTV.

I've read before that studios will mix and match everything to get the right
sound.

You gotta cut me a break here Nick...I am not the biggest Metallica
fan in the world ;-) Heck what I remember most about Lars, is that he
always seemed to be the voice of the band in their battle with
Napster.

Heck, I am not even sure I could have told you what brand the guy
endorses!!

There are plenty of people that do the same.
Porcaro use to play Gretsch in the studio a lot.
Sound is one thing, endorsements and free drums are another.
