There are probably as many systems of drumming as there are instructors of
drumming; and, we all know that there is no one way to teach anything.
But, many teachers and students would like to have an effective plan for
studying and teaching drums. The following is the system I used with my
students. I found it to be very effective for developing the all around
drummer.
1. The key to your hand development is the closed roll.
Specifically, the Buzz Roll (executed by pressing the stick against the pad
to produce an indefinite amount of strokes, thus creating a buzzing sound).
IT FORMS THE FOUNDATION FOR ALL DRUMMING. The reason it is essential
to learn to roll quickly ( 3 to 6 weeks) is: (a) to develop greater
control over your hands, (b) to develop the endurance needed for playing
parades or working at a drum set, and (c) most of all you will be able to
read music, which involves rolls, more quickly. My book BUZZ ROLL BUILDER
(with record) takes care of the rolls and my record YOU PLAY WHILE I SUPPLY
THE COUNT takes care of the reading.

2, MATERIALS: 1 - 12" practice pad - 3 practice pads (pillows)
to use as a dummy drum set - 1 pr. metal drum sticks - 2 pair wooden
sticks (heavy & light) - 1 pr. brushes - drum set (purchase this later on
when you see how well you learn to play).

3. One lesson every two weeks was all that was needed and in six
months time (depending on the students talent) I had my students reading
the following books well: Use all 13 books at once - One lesson in each
book. Start with the BUZZ ROLL BUILDER - Use the YOU PLAY WHILE I
SUPPLY THE COUNT for help with reading : Sam Ulano's (SU's) ABC Guide to
Drumming - Book 1 - (SU's) Rhythm Dictionary - (SU's) Bass bops - (SU's)

There are probably as many systems of drumming as there are
instructors of drumming; and, there is no one way to teach anything. But,

many teachers and students would like to have an effective plan for
studying and teaching drums. Many school instrumental instructors say
their biggest problem with drummers is their inability to read music. I
believe the reason for this is the execution of their rolls. Doing the
rolls rudimentally first takes too long a time; thus, reading music has to
wait. Doing the rolls buzzed, with an emphasis on sound (matching whole
tones of other instruments), a students reading of rolls can begin
immediately. The Buzz Roll (executed by pressing the stick against the pad

to produce an indefinite amount of strokes, thus creating a buzzing sound)
is the key to hand development. It forms the foundation for all drumming.
You will develop greater control over your hands, you will develop the
endurance needed for playing parades or working at a drum set, and most of
all the students reading of music is enhanced greatly.

The following is the system I used with my students. I have found it
to be very effective for developing the all around drummer. One
lesson every two weeks . In 6 months time students (with talent) were
playing very well.

MATERIALS:
1. 1 - 12" practice pad - 3 pillows
(dummy drum set) - metal drum sticks -
2 pr. wooden sticks (1 heavy pr & 1 light pr) - 1 pair
brushes - Drum set (To be
purchsed after 6 months - wait to see if the student has
the talent, coordination,
and interest to go on.

1. Start with Charlie Tucker's BUZZ ROLL BUILDER (with record) to
develop control over your hands. Play through the whole book the very
first time you use it - slowly at first.

2. Using the flyer insert - start reading music with YOU PLAY WHILE
I SUPPLY THE COUNT (record) Then, once they have caught on to the idea
of reading music (about 2 minutes)
assign their lessons in the following books: (The BUZZ ROLL BUILDER
outlines the procedure to follow) Sam Ulano's (SU's) ABC guide to
Drumming Part 1 - (SU's) Rhythm Dictionary Part 1 - (SU's) Bass
Bops - (SU's) Drummers Rudimental Guide - (SU's) Practical Guide for
the Working Drummer - Jim Chapin's Advanced Technique's for the Modern

Drummer - Andy Lalino's Systematic Study in 3/4 for Drums - Paul
Capozzoli's Around the Drums with Triplets - (SU's) The Drummer's Roll

Study Guide - Shelly Horn's Rock and Roll Study (with record) - (SU's)
Foot Develoment - (SU's) Master Drum Reader - Charles S. Wilcoxon

Modern Rudimental Swing Solos for the Advanced Drummer

3. ADDITIONAL BOOKS: Emile Sholle The Roll for Snare Drum -
(SU's) Electronic Drum Solos - *(SU's) Duet Yourself - Ted Reed's
Syncopation for the Modern Drummer - Joel Rothman Drum Arrangements -
Norman Grossman's Duets in Rhythm - (SU's) Drummer's Technique

Exerciser Books 1 to 10

4. RECORDS: (SU's) Drummers Handrill - (SU's) Conception of

Commercial Drumming - (SU's) Trading Solos - (SU's) Timekeeper for

Everybody - Andy lalino Sit In and Play Along on Drums

There are many other very good materials that could be added to this
list, but the above will serve as a good basis for reading any of the other
books on the market. Collect all the books on drumming that you can and
use them. Make this one of your hobbies and I'm sure you'll find it
interesting as well as rewarding.
