Pearl introduced the Masters Studio (Birch) and Masters Custom (Maple)
Series in the mid 90's, I believe. Both of these lines were thin (4ply?)
shells with reinforcing rings, stainless steel hoops, and the I.S.S.
mounting system. I owned a set of the Studio series and they were very nice
drums. Fast forward a few years and Pearl discontinues the Birch series,
adds another maple series with thicker shells and introduces a limited
edition mahogany series, which were also very nice drums but only came in
one finish.
Why did Pearl discontinue the birch line? The story I heard was that maple
was always in more demand but the slightly lower price of the birch series
attracted enough buyers to justify the line. When the price of birch
inflated the price of the Studio Series into maple territory, sales slacked
off. I'm not sure I buy this theory. I've always prefered birch to maple
regardless of the price and I find that most drummers who like birch drums
will buy them without much thought to the price difference. It's a much
different sound and, if you like it it's hard to imagine using a maple kit.
Now zip to the present and Pearl has brought back the Studio Series AND
reintroduced another mahogany line in the Masters series. The new birch
drums are thicker shells without the reinforcing rings, Optimount mounting
system, and standard die cast hoops. I have had a set of these drums for a
couple of months now and other than switching the hoops to the flanged Super
Hoop II (cast hoops made the drums sound boxy to me) I have no complaints
with the new kit. The new drums sound a little more focused to my ear and
maybe a tad louder (they go to 11). The mounting system is clever and the
kit is typical of Pearl's usual high quality.
If I have any complaints about Pearl, it's their constant fiddleing about
with the the different series. I wish they would settle on a couple of good
high end kits and just refine them and add new finishes every now and then,
but then I suppose everyone would get bored with them and start buying the
"new kit on the block".
Now if I can just get my hands on a MasterWorks kit!
