Last night I caught The Bob Mintzer Big Band (in Indianapolis) with John
Riley on drums. What a band!...gotta be one of the best big bands out
there. The band is stocked with some of the finest cats in New York, the
arrangements are smokin', and John Riley's performance in the drum chair was
masterful - tasty and swingin'. And what a beautiful cat - I spoke with him
briefly after the show. He used a K Constantinople 22" ride with 1 rivet
that sounded really sweet.

The Mintzer Big Band is on tour over the next 9 days so catch them if they're
in your area. The itinerary:

Highly recommended!

Absolutely, Kevin!
I caught them the night before (on 2/19) in State College (Penn State), and
they were just terrific. John borrowed a 22" old K of mine from the '40's
(type IIb old stamp) which weighs 2045 grams and used that as his left side
ride instead of his usual 22" Bill Stewart ride - even at that weight it
penetrated the band clearly. (That era represents the first that Zildjian
ever created a 22" cymbal - and that was even before Klook took the
spangalang up to the ride cymbal! Those cymbalsmiths must have known
something back then.)
Anyway, John's a great guy and it's always a pleasure to listen to such a
talented, empathetic and supportive drummer.
