hey I'm looking for a jazz sounding type ride (like a zildjian K) but that can
take rock playing, a lot of crashing accents and such. any suggestions? how are
the K's and K customs at taking this kind of playing? also considering the 24"
zildjian A, is this still made?

I would recommend the 21" K Constantinople Big Band Ride. It's fairly new,
and I haven't seen many in stores, so you might have to hunt for one. It has
a nice dark tone, very articulate without being what passes for "dry" (read
as: it doesn't go: "clang"). It has a very usable bell and it has a nice
amount of cut. I've been using mine with a fusion trio (guitar/bass/drums)
and it cuts great and fills the sound out in a wonderful breathy, airy
fashion. It opens up great when crashed but gets out of its own way quickly.
Truly a great cymbal.

Later,

George

sounds good but arent the K constaniple series very expensive? i'm a student
and only make $6.25/hr so would prefer something less expensive I think.
this is mostly for rock and instrumental free improv, but Ive always liked
darker sounds for cymbals. thanks

It is definitely a pricey cymbal. You'll have to forgive me because I'm a
little stuck on it at the moment. It isn't that much more than the regular
Ks, though, and cymbals retain their value pretty well so call it an
investment. Going a little cheaper you might want to consider the Sabian AAX
Stage Ride or the Zildjian A Sweet Ride. The Sweet Ride in particular is
amazingly versatile, I have played everything on the one that I got (I sound
like an ad). It's not as dark or soulful as the Big Band Ride, but it is a
little darker than your average A due to its weight. They're also much
easier to find in stores (from my experience anyway).

Good Luck,

George

PS - Remember, the biggest suggestion I can give you is to hit a lot of
cymbals - you'll know the right one when you hear. Also, if price is a
factor, you might want to try used, you can usually find some nice stuff
from people who thought they were going to be the next Buddy Rich and gave
it up after 2 months.

You are right. K Cons are THE most outrageously over priced cymbals on the
market. I have a 22" Light K COn ride that is gorgeous, but I paid only $260.00
for it from a GC sales bin. There is no justification for a $650.00 list price.
They are made here in the US and machine made. It is Zildjian's arrogance that
makes these so much $.

Try a Zildjian 20" A Custom Ping. After using a 24" Ping Brilliant for,
jeez, more than 20 years, I found the A Custom and it replaced the 24". I
still had the solid stick definition, but added a nice washable ride that
I could smack with the shoulder of the stick and not get a gong thing
going.

I have to (ahem) agree with Rob. The prices for the const. are rediculous.
Try a Sabian HH 20" Med. Ride. I've used mine for everything from Hard Rock
to R&B to my feeblest attempts at swinging, and it just sings through it
all. Actually sounds like a Const. Big Band, but is a heck of a lot
cheaper!

I play a 20 Sabian HH Classic Ride that might be a fit for what you are
looking for. I find it to be a pretty versatile cymbal: decent cut,
full warm wash for fast rock. And great stick definition and ping for
slower ballads and blues numbers.

My 2 cents.

I haven't heard a Constaninople ride that I like yet. All the ones I have heard
built up too fast. Love the concert crash cymbals and Orchetral suspended
cymbal.

Yeah they cost way too much!

Yeah, I hear you. First off, I can't believe the price you guys are
paying for K Cons. Not that I get special deals or anything, but I'm
certain I've seen K Con rides going for only $200-$275 bones(CDN),
depending on size and dealer.

I too have a Sabian 20" medium ride, but it's an early 80's model,
before they came out with AA, AAX, HH, and on and on.....It's just
called a Sabian 20" medium ride. It's really nice, and very versatile.
It does have a tendency to wash easily though, if you don't play it
right. Haven't really noticed if it sounded like a K Con, though. I
don't think it does....

Jas,
If you can find a 22 K COn for anything NEAR that price, grab them all!!
They list for $650.00. You can see that anywhere. I love mine, but I only
paid $260.00 from a GC sales bin. It is worth about that if not a tad more.
The $650.00 is just Zil's greed and arrogance talking. It is a MASS
produced American made cymbal that is machine hammered. How can they
justify a list of $650.00? Maybe in the Bizarro world? :-)

A local shop who is getting rid of their drum stuff is selling a 20" Avedis
Zildjian Ping Ride for $125, is this a don't pass it up even if you really don't
have the money price ?
Thanks, Dave

Check out a K Zildjian Jazz Ride 20 inch.
That's what I settled on a few years ago when I was looking for the same
thing you want now. Mine has a nice clear ding like good ride cymbals
had 30 to 40 years ago. No overtone. And yes it will produce a good
crash when you want it.

Hope this helps.

I saw Graham Lear play recently (he lives in the Portland, OR area) and he was
playing all new Contantinople cymbals. They sounded beautiful. He says he
uses them on everything--rock, blues, jazz, Latin. I am now seriously
hungering for some Constantinople hi-hats (my hats are old 14" quick beats,
which sound okay for rock, but which sound horrible for jazz), but $300+
doesn't sound too within reach just now. Maybe soon...

BTW, Graham is a deep drummer! I am ashamed that I've only seen him once in
the three years I've lived in Portland. I talked to him a bit and he was very
friendly and down to earth.

I hate the sound of K Custom Darks...The K Cons took that too the
extreme. I hate them.

If anyone's interested in a nationwide price check, I just sampled a
21" K Con Big Band today for $360 in Portage, Michigan.
