hey, you gretsch-heads :-) - is this a rosewood FINISH on a maple shell, or is
the shell actually rosewood?

This is a rosewood finish on a maple shell. The picture looks more like
their walnut finish than rosewood.

Here is what rosewood maple Gretsch drums look like:

interesting. the finish doesn't seem to match that of the drum in the auction.

the figuring on the drum in the auction doesn't look like maple to me, either -
it's very highly-figured - but wood's weird that way. maybe it's just the
photo.

beautiful kit, by the way. :-)

I believe it's a rosewood outer veneer.

Could be. The grain does not look like maple and the finish does not look
like the standard Gretsch rosewood finish. I did not think that Gretsch did
special veneer finihses.

I'm fairly certain that it's a rosewood outer veneer on one of Gretsch's
Asian line snare drums (Renown).

Weren't they supposed to have been making solid ply shells with 3 ply
reinforcement hoops in oak, maple, walnut, and rosewood? That is the way a
lot of these ads were worded for these drums. Were these leftover
Kaman/Legend shells? Has anyone seen the ones I'm talking about?

SIt's about time. o Gretsch finally started a "truth in advertising"
campaign? For years Gretsch's "red rosewood" was nothing more than red
stained maple.

Rosewood was the name of the color. I don't think they advertised that the
shells were made of Rosewood.

In fact the stain color was called "red rosewood".
