The world series was the next step up from the export series in the
80's. I believe that at least one or two of the plies in the shell
are birch and the other plies are something like mahogany. A friend
of mine owned a set, and I recall all of the hardware being the same
as the export kit so the only difference is in the shell materials.

I think a 5-piece kit used to sell new for about $1000-$1200. This
was around 1986.

Not a bad kit if you can get the right price on it.

I found a used five piece set of Pearl World series drums in the 12", 13",
14", 20" configuration for $550. They were in mint condition with a
natural wood finish. Came with tom stands, but w/o a snare. I used them
as a secondary kit and have played many shows with them. They sound pretty
good, nothing spectacular, but solid sounding. They have held up well on
the road. I'd buy I.M.S. or RIMS for them if they were to be my only kit
(they need help in the resonance department).

Hope this helps,
-MJ

The World series hardware was different from Export. World series hardware
was double-braced while Export was not. I think the World's were all-birch
shells. The difference between them and the next step up (BLX series at the
time, I think) was that they had a plastic covering instead of a lacquer
finish. I'm not absolute on this. A decent set, IMHO. I played a set a high
school basketball games in '89 :)

Natural wood finish? I guess the World series did have lacquered finishes,
contrary to what I posted previously in this thread. Sorry about that!

I know that they're higher quality drums than the Pearl Export...that's
for sure!
