I have an old pair of 14" Zilco hats, and I was wondering if I could get
some information on them...

I read somewhere (I think it was MD) that Zilco was the original name
for Canadian made Zildjian cymbals (a lower line of cymbals)...Also that
the Zilco factory would eventually become Sabian, when Bob Zildjian
split from the Zildjian company...

Does anyone have any more info about Zilco? (years they were made, etc.)

Like I said, the Zilcos were originally designated lower quality
cymbals, but I really like my set.. They're very thin (can bend them
with my hands), and aren't very loud, but they have a nice dark sound
that works well for low volume acoustic gigs....

Thanks :)

Brandon

Hey Brandon:

In most of your message, you are primarily correct (according to my
research). As far as I understand, Zilcos were produced out of the Azco
Plant in Meductic New Brunswick, which became the Sabian plant in the
early 80s. I seem to recall however that they were more of a Zildjian
"second," a product that was fine but didn't quite make the grade when
it came down to the sound. They are most certainly not like the lower
line cymbals of today, which are made economizing on the alloys and the
production techniques.

The Azco plant became responsible for the production of a whole lot of A
Zildjians. I have a 16" A Thin Crash from that plant (I am guessing that
it is from the late 70s) that sounds great! I understand that at one
point (before the Zildjian/Sabian split), the Azco plant was responsible
for roughly 40% of the A Zildjian output in 1976-1979. The K series,
when bought over from the Turkish plant, became a responsibility of the
Azco plant as well.

Sources to examine: a 1992 Modern Drummer with the Inside Sabian
article, the same one with Ed Shaughnessey and Johnny Carson. Another
great source is Hugo Pinksterboer's "The Cymbal Book."

Hope this helps.

Correct!

Also, if I'm not mistaken, this Canadian factory also produced 'K'
Zildjian's when Turkish production ceased.

just thought i'd add....i *owned* a Zilco. bought it used at a pawn shop.
it wasn't very pretty, but it was durable. lasted abotu 4 years & i hit
it pretty darn hard. wasn't as good as a B8 or even a scimitar...it was a
weird blend of a a Zildjian Z & a B8. anyways, i trashed it. it only
sounds half good now...i gave it to a local church where they didn't need
very loud cymbals.

I have (1) old 18" Crash from Zilco. I Love it... it has a very nice
dark tone to it. The only problem is that it is beginning the first
stages of cracking.

Hi, I'm pretty new to the group (15 minutes?), I've always dug
percussion, and am finally taking a course in it this semester (I'm a
music major)
Anyway, I have a couple questions:
1) For this course, we have to write a paper on SOMETHING having to do
with percussion. Ideally, I'd like to do mine on the use of percussion
instruments in 20th century compositions (I'm thinking specifically of
John Cage's Construction No. 3 (4?). Can anyone recommend me to any
sources they know of?
2) Secondly, I wrote a piece for 3 percussionists, to be played on
resonant pieces of junk (pots, crates, car parts, etc). Does anybody
know of any avante-type ensemble that would be interested in a piece
like this?

Thanks!

I would LOVE to see the charts!! Is this something that could be covered by one player?? I'm always challenged by trying to cover multi-person parts on my drumKAT. Anyhow.... I'd love to see your charts. Please EMAIL me directly for my Snail Mail address.

Best regards,

I am in the midst of a band just starting out, and I would love to see a
piece like this. No one's instruments are very good anyway, and pieces
of assorted junk make great instruments if you know how to use them. If
you need my regular mail address, just e-mail me. Otherwise, email it
to me at da...@indy.net. Thanx a lot.
