I've heard of them before, but I'm not very familiar with them
at all. Can you give me a rundown on Darwin? Still in business?
Pro kit? Shell construction? Unique features? Thanks for any
info you can give me.

/Jason.

I_THINK_ they are somehow related to Fibes or something... IIRC they are early
Fibes... either I'm 100% right or 100% wrong... =)

the lineage is Fibes, Corder, Darwin, Fibes. I endorsed Darwin in the
early 90's. Gretsch shells (jasper), Fibes hardware. Great drums. That
is a sick price.

They used a Jasper shell, not sure of the plies. They purchased the
hardware dies from the old Fibes, and were the first to use a shell mounted,
sliding bass drum mount, like DW has now. They went out of business and
were bought by Tommy up in Austin when he ressurected the old Fibes drums.
Excellent kits, and Tommy was offering a free badge switch to interested
parties.

Actually, the slide mount was invented by Jim Corder in Huntsville
Alabama. I bought some from him when the company was Corder. He ended up
with the Fibes machinery after Fibes went under. The whole kit and
kaboodle was sold to Sammy Darwin (aka Rusty Walker; country radio
consultant ) and moved to a factory in iukd Mississippi that was run by
Ken Austin who now runs Johnny Rabb Drumsticks and Jim Catalano,
formerly of Ludwig. Darwin didn't last too long. probably underfunded.
Tommy ended up buying the Fibes machinery from Darwin and the Fibes name
from some other guy who never did more with it than make Fibes
Drumsticks.

the plies of the Jasper shell are 3 of gum and 3 of maple.

I remember the guy/company - he had a blue sparkle 4-piece kit in your
store. Was he also one of your instructors for a while?

After my parents tried to kill Bud Berthold (remember that?), I took from
Jim Corder (I think that was his last name) for a few months. He had a blue
four-piece Corder kit sitting in your store that he kept trying to sell me -
it looked nice, but I wanted fifty drums and cymbals at the time and passed.

Remember the guy? This was right around 1986.

Yes, but the wrong guy. Jim Corder the manufacturer lived in Huntsville
alabama and was sixty years old and had a lame foot. but your teacher
Jim Corder did have a blue set of Corders that I sold to him.

George,
Do you know of anyone who has bought a set of Fibes and put die cast hoops on them
to sound like a Gretsch kit? It only makes sense that would be an economical way
of getting the "Great Gretsch Sound" without being bent over.

What happened w/ your parents and Bud Berthold? Tell the story- I know Bud
from the old shop. And Cliff, did you perform in the drum-off that George's
Drum Shop had? I have a video tape of that event (partial, some dickweed
recorded over some of it) but the great players are on it. Keith Carlock's
on it, and he went on to be the crema de puta madre that played on track 3
of the new Steely Dan album.
