Hello- What does beech sound like in comparison to birch and maple? Why is it
only Sonor (and now Yamaha) chooses to use it. By the way is there a book or
web site that discusses the sound quality of different types of wood? I think
it would be pretty useful for drummers and all musicians. Thanks.

For the most part, yes.
Very late in the Sig run there were also birch
and maple produced.

Beech and Birch. Beech was what made Sonor Sonor.

MD did a review on the Yamaha Beech customs. If I remember correctly,
they said the beech falls in between maple and birch in sound
characteristics.

BTW, many say maple is warmer than birch and birch has more attack, of
course this is all very subjective.

Hoped this helped a little.

Go to www.yamahadrums.com they have sound samples of their beech, birch and
maple drums. Also www.sabian.com has sound samples of all their cymbals.

Have fun!

www.drumdojo.com , the semantic part of RMMP.net has a piece written by our
own Mike Radcliffe on different qualities of wood and other factors
affecting the sound of a drum (hoops, edges etc). interesting stuff.

ALL Sonor drums were made of beech until 1983. Sonor, Trixon, Lefima
and Tromsa all used beech shells. I guess there must be a lot of beech
trees in Germany.

Sigs were available in birch (light) after about 1984. Sig SE's were
offered in maple in 1991. The Signature Jet Set was maple shelled as
well.
